Sanguisugabogg emerged from Columbus, Ohio in 2019 with a mission statement that doubled as a band name. It translates to "blood leech bog," which tells you everything about their aesthetic before you hear a single riff. The core lineup of Cameron Boggs on vocals, Cedrik Davis and Devin Swank on guitars, Drew Arnold on bass, and Cody Davidson behind the kit assembled with a clear goal: make death metal that sounds exactly like it did in the early 90s, but grosser.

Their 2019 demo caught attention in underground circles for doing nothing innovative whatsoever, which was precisely the point. While other bands chased technicality or atmospheric experimentation, Sanguisugabogg committed fully to sludgy, mid-paced brutality. Songs like "Menstrual Envy" established their formula: downtuned guitars so thick you could spread them on toast, guttural vocals recorded through what sounds like actual swamp water, and tempos that prioritize crushing weight over speed.

Century Media signed them in 2020, which raised some eyebrows. A major metal label backing a band named after bog leeches felt either prescient or desperate, depending on who you asked. Their 2021 debut full-length "Tortured Whole" answered that question definitively. Tracks like "Pornographic Seizures" and "Dead as Shit" delivered exactly what the titles promised, with production courtesy of Cody Davidson that made everything sound appropriately filthy. The album hit number 20 on Billboard's Hard Rock chart, which meant people outside the tape-trading scene were actually paying attention.

What separates Sanguisugabogg from pure novelty is their understanding of death metal fundamentals. Yes, song titles like "Interlube" and "Stunt Cock Sacrifice" suggest juvenilia, but the actual riffs know their Obituary and Bolt Thrower. "Dragged by a Truck" became something of a signature track, showcasing their ability to write hooks heavy enough to leave tire marks.

They spent 2022 and 2023 touring relentlessly, supporting everyone from Dying Fetus to Cattle Decapitation. The live show is straightforward: five guys in basketball jerseys and basketball shorts playing death metal that sounds like your stereo is drowning. No costumes, no theatrics, just maximum downtuned heaviness.

Their second album "Homicidal Ecstasy" dropped in 2023, proving the debut wasn't a fluke. Songs like "Black Market Vasectomy" and "Necrosexual Deviant" continued their tradition of titles that guarantee a conversation with HR if anyone sees your Spotify. But underneath the provocation sits genuine songcraft. They understand dynamics, when to lumber and when to accelerate into blast beats.

Sanguisugabogg represents death metal's id made manifest. They're not pushing boundaries or deconstructing the genre. They're just five Midwesterners who recognized that sometimes you don't need innovation, you just need riffs heavy enough to rupture internal organs. Whether that's profound or profoundly stupid depends entirely on your tolerance for songs called "Cum Gravy."

Their shows are pit destinations. The crowds are there to get beaten up in the nicest possible way. Sanguisugabogg plays tight and absolutely merciless—no showmanship, just relentless riffing and blast beats. The pit opens immediately and doesn't close.
