Sanguisugabogg
Aragon Ballroom — Chicago, IL

Sanguisugabogg is a death metal band from Columbus, Ohio that sounds exactly like their name suggests: visceral, chaotic, and committed to the bit. They emerged in the late 2010s with a sound that blends straightforward death metal brutality with the nihilistic chaos of grindcore, treating song titles and artwork with the same irreverent approach as early Napalm Death. Despite the shock-value aesthetic, there's real technical chops underneath—blast beats that don't let up, riffs that burrow into your skull, and vocals that sound like something's actively eating its way out. They've built a genuine cult following by doing the least commercially viable thing possible: doubling down on the extreme metal fundamentals while everyone else chases trends. Their records are short, sharp, and designed to feel like an assault.

Their shows are pit destinations. The crowds are there to get beaten up in the nicest possible way. Sanguisugabogg plays tight and absolutely merciless—no showmanship, just relentless riffing and blast beats. The pit opens immediately and doesn't close.

Sanguisugabogg rolled through X-Ray Arcade in July 2025, bringing their particular brand of death metal chaos to Milwaukee's underground circuit. The set opened with 'Face Ripped Off' before pivoting into a cover of Black Sabbath's 'Sweet Leaf'—a move that undercut any pretense of pure brutality with something almost playful. From there it was business as usual: 'Rotted Entanglement' and 'Dragged by a Truck' landed with the kind of visceral weight that makes small venues feel smaller. They closed out their eight-song set with 'Dead as Shit,' which is either the most on-brand band name joke or completely accidental. Either way, it worked.

Milwaukee's underground death metal scene exists in that productive liminal space between genuine local support and total obscurity. The city's smaller venues—like X-Ray Arcade—have become reliable stops for touring bands willing to skip the obvious markets. There's no pretense here, just people who show up for loud music in tight rooms. Sanguisugabogg fits perfectly into this ecosystem: uncompromising, weird enough to be interesting, unpretentious enough to actually connect with the crowd.

Stay in Whitefish Bay or the East Side — quieter, tree-lined neighborhoods with actual character. Dinner at Colectivo's sister restaurant Odd Duck for inventive local cooking, or hit up Uchi if you want something more refined. Spend your day at the Harley-Davidson Museum if you're into American icons, or walk through the Milwaukee Public Market for the best cross-section of local food producers. The lakefront is worth an afternoon, and if blues is the point of the trip, catch a set at Colectivo or one of the Walnut Street venues while you're in town.
