Static Dress came out of Leeds in 2018 with something to prove. The band formed around vocalist Olli Appleyard, who'd spent time in the local hardcore scene but wanted to push past the usual breakdowns and blast beats into something more unhinged. They pulled together a lineup that could handle both the pretty and the punishing, which turned out to be the entire point.

Their early stuff leaned hard into chaotic post-hardcore, all jagged guitars and Appleyard's voice ricocheting between melodic and completely unglued. The 2020 single "Clean" got them noticed beyond Yorkshire, but it was really "Sweet" and "Such.A.Shame" that showed what they were actually about: songs that could feel like three different bands arguing in the same room, somehow landing on something cohesive. The production was messy in the right ways, like they'd rather capture the moment than polish it to death.

2021's "Di-sinTer" EP was when things clicked. "Fleahouse" and especially "Courtney, Just Relax" proved they could write hooks that stuck without losing the edge. Appleyard's lyrics got more personal, dealing with his trans identity and mental health in ways that felt specific rather than vague. The vulnerability wasn't performative, which made it land harder.

"Rouge Carpet Disaster" arrived in 2022 as their debut full-length, and it tried to do everything at once. "Attempt 8" opened with eerie restraint before exploding. "Nevermind" became one of their defining tracks, bouncing between sugary melody and throat-shredding desperation. "Lye Solution" went full metalcore. "Di-sinTer" showed up again in a reworked form because apparently they weren't done with it. The album was overstuffed but that felt intentional, like they were throwing every idea at the wall before someone told them they couldn't.

The singles kept coming. "Borrowed Time" leaned into alt-rock territory with actual singing for most of its runtime. "Lifted" went darker. "Rat" and "Mistake" showed they could still write the kind of songs that make you want to trash a room. None of it sounded like they were settling into a formula, which either means they're still figuring it out or they're allergic to staying in one place.

They've spent the past couple years touring hard, opening for bigger acts and headlining smaller rooms that get appropriately sweaty. Appleyard remains one of the more compelling frontpeople in this corner of rock, partly because he seems genuinely unbothered by what's expected. The band's somewhere between breaking through and burning out, which is probably where they're most comfortable anyway. Second album's supposedly coming. Whether it tightens up or doubles down on the chaos is the open question.

Shows tend to be surprisingly physical affairs. The pits are real but not hostile. Frontman does a lot of stage movement, throws himself around during heavier moments. Crowd knows the words and isn't shy about singing them back. Tighter than you'd expect for a younger band.
