About Scene Queen
Scene Queen is the project of Phoebe Duo Wang, a hyperpop artist who emerged from the Internet underground with a sound that's deliberately abrasive and emotionally raw. Her music sits in the liminal space between pop melody and harsh noise, layering distorted synths and breathy vocals over chaotic production that shouldn't work but does. Tracks like "It Gets Worse" showcase her ability to pair genuinely catchy hooks with production that sounds like it's falling apart in real time. She's become something of a figurehead in the hyperpop scene without ever trying to be palatable, instead leaning harder into the genre's most experimental impulses. Her work explores themes of alienation, identity, and the psychological weight of online existence, all delivered with an almost conversational detachment that makes the darker moments hit harder.
Her sets are tense and hypnotic rather than celebratory. The crowd gets quiet and focused, drawn into the disorienting production. She performs with minimal movement but absolute presence, and the distorted sound design creates this almost uncomfortable intimacy despite the size of the room.
Known for It Gets Worse, Immaculate Conception, Betrayal Bonds, Frail Limbs Weak Heart, Scapegoat
Scene Queen + Chicago
Scene Queen brought their maximalist hyperpop theatrics to Thalia Hall in July 2025, delivering a 14-song set that doubled down on the project's fixation with provocative titles and boundary-pushing production. Opening with "BDSM" and maintaining momentum through deep cuts like "L-Shaped Couch" and "Hot Singles in Your Area," the Chicago show felt like watching someone's id made into sound—relentless, unfiltered, and oddly compelling in its refusal to play it safe. Closing with "18+" felt appropriate, a final middle finger to anyone expecting restraint. Chicago's underground electronic and experimental rap scenes have always had space for this kind of transgressive art, and Scene Queen fit naturally into that lineage.

Live Music in Chicago
Chicago's experimental music landscape has long embraced the weird and uncomfortable—from the industrial pioneers of Wax Trax to contemporary underground rap and electronic experimentalists pushing boundaries at venues like Thalia Hall. The city's clubbing culture and DIY spirit create room for hyperpop and avant-garde pop acts that would struggle elsewhere. Scene Queen's arrival tapped into that same ethos: music that's deliberately crude, digitally fractured, and suspicious of mainstream polish.
Chicago road trip to see Scene Queen?
Stay in Lincoln Park or Wicker Park depending on your vibe—both neighborhoods have real character and plenty of late-night options. Book dinner at Alinea if you're feeling ambitious, or hit RPM Italian for something excellent and less impossible to get into. Spend an afternoon at the Art Institute, then walk along the Lakefront. The city's got enough to fill a weekend without feeling like you're checking boxes. Catch the show, eat well, and remember why you liked this band in the first place.
