About Mariah the Scientist
Mariah the Scientist turned biology major dropout into one of R&B's more interesting voices over the past few years, trading pre-med for melancholy and making it work. Born Mariah Buckles in Atlanta, she was literally studying science at St. John's University in New York before deciding that writing songs about messy relationships made more sense than lab work. The stage name isn't exactly subtle, but it stuck.
She started posting music on SoundCloud and Instagram in 2018, catching attention with her early tracks that mixed traditional R&B vocals with the spacey, trap-adjacent production that defines a lot of Atlanta's sound. Her debut project "To Die For" dropped in 2018 and got her signed to RCA, but it was really "Master" in 2019 that put her on the map. The album had this cohesive, late-night vibe throughout, with Mariah playing both vulnerable and detached over beats that felt expensive but not overdone.
The Tory Lanez connection helped raise her profile when she signed to his One Umbrella imprint, though that association got complicated later for obvious reasons. "RY RY WORLD" came in 2021 and showed growth, featuring Young Thug on the standout track "Walked In." The album title referenced her childhood nickname and leaned further into the trap-soul space she'd been carving out, with production that gave her room to layer melodies and show off her vocal runs without getting too showy about it.
"Buckles Laboratories" dropped in 2022 and might be her most realized project yet. Songs like "Bout Mine" featuring Young Thug again proved she could hold her own on more aggressive tracks, while cuts like "From A Woman" showcased the emotional depth that makes her more than just another voice in the Atlanta R&B scene. The science lab concept she'd been playing with since her name finally got a full thematic treatment.
Her collaboration work has been smart too. "Hotel" with Young Thug became a fan favorite, and she's contributed to tracks with artists like Lil Baby. The Young Thug connection runs deep, both musically and personally, and she's been vocal about supporting him during his legal issues.
The songs people really connect with tend to live in that space between numb and hurt. "2 You" has this exhausted honesty to it. "Always n Forever" plays with the gap between what people say and what they mean. She's good at writing about the specific type of dysfunction that comes with modern dating and relationships that probably should have ended months ago.
Right now she's positioned somewhere between underground favorite and mainstream breakthrough, with a dedicated fanbase that appreciates the specificity of her songwriting and the way she sounds both contemporary and classic at once.
Her shows have an understated intensity. Crowds lean in rather than jump around. She's not trying to hype the room, and her fans don't need her to. There's a respect there. She delivers bars with precision, and people actually listen.
