About Maisy Kay
Maisy Kay came up through the UK music scene in the late 2010s, one of those artists who seemed to appear fully formed on streaming playlists without anyone quite remembering how they got there. She's from London, started writing songs as a teenager, and released her first tracks when she was still figuring out what kind of artist she wanted to be.
Her early singles had that polished bedroom pop sound that was everywhere around 2018 and 2019. "This Is What I Look Like" arrived in 2019 and got her onto some Spotify editorial playlists, which is how most people found her. The song had this confessional quality that felt genuine rather than performed, talking about self-image and social media anxiety in a way that didn't sound like she was trying too hard to be relatable.
She followed it with tracks like "Lone Ranger" and "Colour of You," which leaned into a more produced pop direction. There was some major label interest around this time, and you could hear the budget increase in the production. The songs were catchy without being overly calculated, though they didn't quite break through to the mainstream the way similar artists managed to do.
By 2020, she was releasing music through Atlantic Records and putting out singles that showed she could work in different modes. "Maybe" was softer and more vulnerable, while other tracks leaned into a more upbeat pop sensibility. She has this voice that sits somewhere between breathy and powerful, never quite committing to either extreme, which gives her music this middle ground that's easy to listen to but sometimes hard to remember.
The pandemic hit right when she should have been touring and building momentum, which probably didn't help her trajectory. She kept releasing music though, including "Ride or Die" in 2021, which had a bit more edge to it. The lyrics got more specific, less universal, which made some of the songs more interesting even if they were less obviously suited for playlists.
She's still releasing music and seems to be in that phase where she's accumulated a decent following without becoming particularly famous. Her social media presence is active without being overwhelming, and she collaborates with producers and writers who work across the UK pop scene.
The challenge for her now is probably the same one facing a lot of artists who came up through streaming: she has listeners but maybe not fans in the traditional sense. People know her songs without necessarily knowing her. She's young enough that there's plenty of time to figure out what her second act looks like, whether that's leaning further into pop or pulling back into something more personal. For now, she's steady rather than spectacular, which in the current music landscape might actually be sustainable.
Her sets feel like intimate conversations happening in a crowded room. There's focus—people actually listen instead of just waiting for drops. She commands attention without aggression, reading the room and adjusting accordingly. The audience is mixed, engaged, sometimes laughing at things that cut.
