About Incite
Incite started in 2004 when Richie Cavalera, son of Sepultura and Soulfly's Max Cavalera, decided to step out from behind the long shadow of his father's legacy and make something his own. Based in Phoenix, Arizona, the band carved out space in the groove metal and thrash crossover scene, drawing obvious comparisons to Max's work but committed to establishing their own identity.
The early years were about building credibility through relentless touring rather than riding on a famous last name. Their 2009 debut "The Slaughter" came out on Minus Head Records and introduced their brand of straightforward, pit-ready metal. It wasn't reinventing anything, but it was sincere. Richie's vocals had that familiar Cavalera rasp, but the songs leaned into a more accessible groove metal template than pure thrash aggression.
"All Out War" followed in 2010, then "Up in Hell" in 2014, each record tightening their sound and expanding their audience in the underground metal circuit. They were a touring band first, the kind that would play anywhere and everywhere, slowly converting crowds one sweaty club at a time. By the time "Oppression" dropped in 2016, they'd logged thousands of miles and shared stages with basically everyone in their weight class.
The real shift came with 2018's "Built to Destroy." The production was sharper, the songwriting more focused, and tracks like "Ruthless Ways" and "Poisoned by Power" showed a band that had finally figured out exactly what they were. It wasn't about outrunning the Cavalera name anymore. It was about being a solid, dependable groove metal band that knew how to write a hook and didn't pretend to be more complicated than necessary.
2020 brought "Wake Up Dead," which leaned even harder into the groove elements while maintaining the aggression. They'd become reliably good at what they do—midtempo crushers with the occasional thrash sprint, politically charged lyrics that don't get too preachy, and an understanding that most people just want something heavy to nod their heads to.
These days, Incite occupies a comfortable position in the modern metal landscape. They're not headlining arenas, but they're not struggling either. They've released eight albums, maintained a consistent touring schedule, and built a dedicated following that appreciates workmanlike metal without pretension. Richie has stepped out of his father's shadow not by rejecting the influence but by owning it and doing his own thing within a similar framework.
They're the kind of band that reminds you groove metal never actually went away, it just stopped trying to be famous. Sometimes that's enough.
Legitimately heavy shows where pits form immediately. Aggressive crowds of dedicated metalcore fans who know every breakdown. No theatrics, just consistent wall-of-sound heaviness.
