Good Boy Daisy started making music in a Toronto bedroom around 2018, which is pretty much the required origin story for indie pop acts this decade. The project began as vocalist Maya Chen's solo endeavor, recording demos on a laptop between shifts at a coffee shop. Those early tracks had that particular kind of lo-fi charm that comes from actual technical limitations rather than expensive plugins trying to sound broke.

The name supposedly came from Chen's neighbor's dog, though she's given different explanations in different interviews. The music drew from that sweet spot where bedroom pop meets indie rock, with drum machines that sound like drum machines and guitars recorded in rooms with bad acoustics. Early singles like Good Boy and Daisy dropped on Bandcamp without much fanfare, but they found their way onto the right playlists. The songs had this specific kind of melancholy that works well at 2am when you're still awake for no good reason.

Sunday Morning became the breakthrough track in 2020, which was ironic timing for a song about lazy mornings with someone else. It picked up traction on streaming platforms during lockdown, probably because everyone was stuck inside thinking about the last time they had a casual Sunday with another person. The production was slightly more polished than the earlier stuff, though it kept that intimate, close-mic'd vocal sound that made it feel like Chen was singing in your bedroom rather than hers.

The debut album Velvet came out in 2021 on indie label Kanine Records. By this point, Good Boy Daisy had expanded into a full band for live shows, with Chen's college friend James Park on guitar and a rotating cast of Toronto musicians filling out the sound. The album leaned into that velvet name, adding more texture and layers while keeping the core aesthetic intact. Tracks like Neon Signs showed Chen developing as a songwriter beyond the relationship documentation that dominates most bedroom pop, though there was still plenty of that too.

The live shows developed a reputation for being surprisingly energetic given how subdued the recordings are. Chen's stage presence is more animated than her whispery vocals would suggest, and the full band arrangements hit harder than the bedroom versions. They've toured across North America and Europe, doing the standard indie pop circuit of small venues and festival sidestages.

As of 2024, Good Boy Daisy is working on a follow-up album, though details remain vague beyond some Instagram studio photos. Recent singles suggest a slightly broader sonic palette, incorporating more synths and the occasional saxophone, which either means growth or the kind of experimentation that happens when you get bored of your own sound. Either way, they've carved out a space in that crowded bedroom pop landscape by just being consistently decent at writing sad songs that don't feel manipulative about it.

Their shows tend to be quiet affairs where people actually listen instead of talking through the set. There's something almost private about a Good Boy Daisy performance, like you're in someone's apartment at 2am. Small venue crowds lean in.
