Godsmack emerged from the Massachusetts rock scene in the mid-90s, initially formed by frontman Sully Erna after his previous band Strip Mind called it quits. The name supposedly came from an Alice in Chains song, which tells you pretty much everything you need to know about their early sound. Erna linked up with bassist Robbie Merrill, guitarist Tony Rombola, and drummer Tommy Stewart, and they started grinding it out in the Boston club circuit.

The band's self-titled debut dropped in 1998 on Universal Records after they'd already built a serious local following. The album went multi-platinum largely on the back of "Whatever" and "Keep Away," both of which got relentless rock radio play. They had that post-grunge heaviness mixed with a kind of tribal drumming thing that set them apart slightly from the pack. The Alice in Chains influence was undeniable, particularly in Erna's vocal delivery, but they carved out enough of their own identity to avoid being written off as knockoffs.

Awake arrived in 2000 and did even better commercially. "Awake" and "Greed" became staples, and the album eventually moved over five million copies. They were now firmly established as one of the more successful hard rock acts of the early 2000s, touring constantly and appearing on every major rock festival bill. Faceless came in 2003, debuting at number one and giving them another hit with "Straight Out of Line." The pattern was set: heavy riffs, Erna's distinctive vocals, songs built for arenas and Active Rock playlists.

IV in 2006 continued the streak with "Speak" and "The Enemy," though by this point they weren't surprising anyone. They knew their formula and stuck to it. The Oracle in 2010 and 1000hp in 2014 kept them in the conversation, even if rock radio itself was becoming less culturally dominant. They'd also developed this side interest in acoustic performances, which actually worked better than you'd expect.

When They Rise came out in 2018, hitting number three on the Billboard 200. They remained a reliable draw on the touring circuit, particularly in the summer shed and amphitheater rotation. Erna has kept the lineup relatively stable over the years, with the core members mostly intact minus some drummer changes early on.

These days Godsmack sits comfortably in that legacy hard rock space. They're not chasing trends or reinventing themselves. They tour regularly, their catalog gets streamed by people who came up in the late 90s and early 2000s, and they deliver exactly what their fans expect. Erna also does some solo work and has gotten into spirituality and meditation, which gives interviews a different flavor than your standard hard rock frontman chat. They're still around, still heavy, still doing their thing.

Godsmack shows are loud and straightforward. The crowd comes to hear the hits and bang their heads in unison. Erna commands the stage with his voice front and center. It's professional, dependable rock—no surprises, which is exactly what people expect.
