Ashnikko makes the kind of music that sounds like it was designed in a lab to make people argue in comment sections. Born Ashton Casey in North Carolina but raised partly in Estonia and Latvia, she landed in London as a teenager and started making abrasive, confrontational pop that splits listeners pretty cleanly down the middle. The blue hair and anime aesthetics didn't hurt the whole deliberately-polarizing thing either.

She'd been releasing music since 2016, but 2019's Stupid featuring Yung Baby Tate turned her into an actual phenomenon. The song went properly viral on TikTok, which is how most people under 25 hear about anything now, and suddenly she had a hit built on calling someone stupid in increasingly creative ways over a beat that sounds like sugar and battery acid. It's catchy enough that you forget it's kind of unhinged until you're singing it out loud in public.

The follow-up singles kept the momentum going. Cry samples Grimes, which should tell you everything about where Ashnikko sits in the pop ecosystem. Tantrum sounds exactly like its title. Daisy is about murdering someone with a baseball bat and became her biggest song, because apparently that's what resonates. She has this whole thing about reclaiming anger and sexuality in ways that make people uncomfortable, which works better in some songs than others.

Her 2021 mixtape Demidevil showed she could sustain the aesthetic beyond singles. Deal with It featuring Kelis is legitimately good, pairing her cartoonish aggression with someone who's been doing weird pop since before Ashnikko was born. Slumber Party with Princess Nokia leans into the whole women-supporting-women angle without feeling forced. L8r Boi flips Avril Lavigne's Sk8er Boi into something meaner and queerer, which feels inevitable in retrospect.

The sound sits somewhere between hyperpop chaos, rap aggression, and pop hooks designed to survive in 15-second clips. Producers like Slinger helped craft beats that are abrasive but structured enough for radio play, assuming the lyrics get past standards and practices. Her voice does this thing where it's sweet and threatening at the same time, which is harder to pull off than it sounds.

Weedkiller dropped in 2023 as her proper debut album, a concept record about killing a fictional partner that's less shocking than it wants to be at this point. You Make Me Sick and Cheerleader show some growth in the songwriting. Worms is genuinely weird. The album didn't quite hit the same cultural moment as her earlier singles, but that's partly because the whole hyperpop-adjacent space got crowded fast.

She's still touring and releasing music, still doing the whole blue alien fairy thing. The work remains divisive, aggressive, and specifically tailored for people who think pop music should make you feel slightly unsafe.

Her shows are chaotic in the best way. Expect crowds that actually engage rather than film, lots of crowd participation on tracks like "Deal with It," and an artist who seems genuinely amused by how unpolished everything is. She commits to the bit without being annoying about it.
