About UB40
UB40 formed in Birmingham, England in 1978, named after an unemployment benefit form. The eight-piece band became one of the most successful reggae acts outside Jamaica by blending roots reggae with pop accessibility. Their 1983 cover of "Red Red Wine" became their signature track, hitting number one globally and introducing millions to their laid-back, horn-driven sound. Throughout the 1980s and 90s, they maintained a steady stream of hits with covers and originals alike—"Kingston Town," their reinterpretation of a Lord Creator song, proved their knack for revitalizing older tracks. Ali Campbell's smooth, conversational vocals made reggae feel conversational rather than preached. Beyond the hits, UB40 earned respect for their socially conscious lyrics and refusal to shy away from political themes. The band's longevity speaks to something genuine: they made reggae feel natural to British and American audiences without stripping it of substance.

UB40 + Chicago
UB40 rolled through Ravinia Park in late August, delivering a setlist that balanced their reggae foundation with unexpected covers. They opened with 'Here I Am' and worked through the catalog methodically, hitting 'Many Rivers to Cross' and the Smokey Robinson-penned 'The Way You Do the Things You Do' before the obvious hits took over. 'Kingston Town' landed deep in the set, a reminder that their appeal extends well beyond 'Red Red Wine.' The Bob Dylan cover 'I'll Be Your Baby Tonight' showed their range, and they closed with 'Can't Help Falling in Love,' which felt almost inevitable. Chicago's reggae audience has always had a soft spot for their easygoing approach to the genre.

Live Music in Chicago
Chicago's reggae scene exists in the margins, overshadowed by the city's deeper commitments to house, blues, and hip-hop. But that's partly what makes UB40 matter here. They're one of the few reggae acts with genuine crossover appeal, and the city's known for surprising itself with artists it doesn't initially expect to care about. Reggae's always been the soundtrack to something, even if Chicago hasn't always known it.
Chicago road trip to see UB40?
Stay in Lincoln Park or Wicker Park depending on your vibe—both neighborhoods have real character and plenty of late-night options. Book dinner at Alinea if you're feeling ambitious, or hit RPM Italian for something excellent and less impossible to get into. Spend an afternoon at the Art Institute, then walk along the Lakefront. The city's got enough to fill a weekend without feeling like you're checking boxes. Catch the show, eat well, and remember why you liked this band in the first place.
