About Train
Train emerged from San Francisco in the late 90s with a sound that split the difference between 90s alternative rock and radio-friendly pop sensibility. They hit their commercial peak in the mid-2000s when 'Drops of Jupiter' became inescapable, a sprawling track that somehow worked despite its kitchen-sink approach to arrangements. 'Hey Soul Sister' cemented their status as a mainstream act, though it also solidified some people's conviction that they were aggressively corny. Their earlier work, particularly around 'Meet Virginia' and 'Calling All Angels,' showed more textural ambition and less predictability. Lead singer Pat Monahan has a conversational delivery that can feel either disarming or grating depending on your tolerance for earnestness. They've largely leaned into their catalog strength and touring reliability rather than chasing relevance, which is probably the right call.
Train shows are wedding reception energy. People sing along to every word of the big hits, the crowd gets genuinely into it, and there's a lot of swaying and phone recording. Monahan talks between songs in a way that either lands as charming or self-indulgent. Shows run long and feel competent.

Train + Tampa
Train rolled through Tampa last August, hitting the MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre with the kind of setlist that rewards longtime fans. They opened with "Calling All Angels" and spent the evening threading together deep cuts like "Get to Me" and "AM Gold" alongside the predictable hits. The real moment came when they stretched "Seven Bridges Road" into "Bruises," letting the song breathe in a way that felt earned. They closed out the night with "Drops of Jupiter," which is exactly the kind of obvious choice that somehow still works when you've been building to it for two hours.

Live Music in Tampa
Tampa's got a weird mix of arena rock legacy and genuine indie credibility, which actually suits Train fine. You've got the Amalie Arena crowd ready for mainstream rock nostalgia, but the city also supports actual musicians at smaller spots. The mid-2000s pop-rock thing that Train rode never fully left Florida — it's in the DNA here, comfortable and familiar.
Tampa road trip to see Train?
Skip the strip and head to Hyde Park, Tampa's most livable neighborhood with tree-lined streets, independent shops, and genuine character. Stay nearby and eat at The Bricks of Hyde Park for elevated Southern cuisine in a refurbished historic building. Spend an afternoon at the Dali Museum in nearby St. Petersburg—it's legitimately world-class and a solid hour drive but worth it. Walk along Bayshore Boulevard at sunset before the show. The whole vibe is understated enough that Johnson will feel like the most exciting thing happening all weekend.
