About Toto
Toto formed in Los Angeles in 1977 as a supergroup of session musicians who decided to make records together. The band features Dennis DeVore on vocals, Steve Lukather on guitar, David Paich on keyboards, and Jeff Porcaro on drums, among rotating members. They hit immediately with Hold the Line in 1978 and never really stopped. Africa became their defining moment—a song so ubiquitous it transcended the band itself and became part of the cultural fabric. Rosanna followed as another massive hit. What gets lost sometimes is that these guys could actually play. They won a Grammy for Toto IV in 1983 and kept making albums for decades. The band broke up briefly in the 90s but reunited and has kept touring. They're the kind of band that appeals to people who think they don't like 80s pop rock until Africa comes on.
Toto shows are exactly what you'd expect: well-played, energetic, and full of singalongs. Crowds lose it when Africa hits. The band sounds tight because these are genuinely skilled musicians. Sets lean heavily on the hits but show they've got range.

Toto + Kansas City
Toto rolled through Kansas City in late March, hitting the Uptown Theater with the kind of setlist that rewards the faithful. They stretched out with deep cuts like "Kingdom of Desire" and "You Are the Flower" alongside the inevitable "Africa," but the real moment came when they closed out with "With a Little Help From My Friends" — a choice that felt less obligatory cover and more like a genuine thank you to the crowd. The band still knows how to pace a show, letting keyboard solos breathe and giving the drums room to speak. It's the kind of performance that reminds you why these songs stuck around for four decades.

Live Music in Kansas City
Kansas City's music DNA runs deep in blues and jazz, but the city's also developed a solid appetite for the kind of arena rock and pop that Toto represents. The Uptown Theater and similar mid-sized venues have become reliable stops for classic rock acts and touring bands that balance radio hits with genuine instrumental chops. It's a city that respects musicians who can actually play.
Kansas City road trip to see Toto?
Stay in Midtown, where the neighborhood has a real rhythm to it beyond just the venue. Hit up Betty Rae's for upscale barbecue that actually justifies the hype, then walk it off exploring the galleries and vintage shops along Baltimore. Catch a show at the Truman or Liberty Hall depending on the size, but leave time to visit Union Station—it's legitimately one of the finest Beaux-Arts buildings in the country, and worth seeing even if you're just passing through. The Power and Light District is there if you want drinks after, but Midtown's got better bones.
