About Toadies
Toadies emerged from Fort Worth, Texas in the early 90s as part of that wave of alternative rock bands who actually stuck around. They're basically defined by Possum Kingdom, that 1994 single with the murky guitar riff and the weirdly unsettling lyrics about some lake. It became a staple of 90s rock radio almost by accident—people couldn't quite figure out if it was genuinely creepy or just catchy. The band's full-length debut Rubberneck landed in 1997 and confirmed they weren't just a one-hit situation, though Possum Kingdom obviously remains their calling card. After breaking up in 2002, they reformed in 2008 and have been the steady touring type ever since. They've never really reinvented themselves or chased trends. Just a straightforward alternative rock band from Texas who made one genuinely weird song that still holds up.
Toadies shows are competent and committed but not particularly flashy. Crowds show up expecting Possum Kingdom and get a solid set of 90s rock that lands without drama. They've got the chops but aren't trying to blow your mind—just deliver the songs the way people remember them.

Toadies + New Orleans
Toadies rolled through House of Blues on Halloween 2022 and delivered exactly what you'd want from a band that's been doing this since the early '90s. They led with "Little Sin" and "Polly Jean," letting people find their footing before hitting "Possum Kingdom"—the one everyone knows. But the night belonged to the deep cuts: "Velvet" sits in that sweet spot between groovy and unsettling, and "I Come From the Water" showed why these guys earned their cult following. Closing with a cover of "I Put a Spell on You" was a smart move for October 31st, though it felt less novelty and more like they understood the room. Nineteen songs in, they proved they're still a band that knows how to construct a set.

Live Music in New Orleans
New Orleans doesn't need alt-rock to survive, but it never rejects it either. The city's DNA is blues, soul, and brass—which is exactly the underbelly Toadies dig into. Their murky, guitar-driven sound finds common ground with how New Orleans values rawness and groove over polish. There's a reason bands like Toadies feel at home here: the city respects musicians who care about the song, not the show.
New Orleans road trip to see Toadies?
Stay in the Marigny neighborhood—closer to the actual music scene than the French Quarter, with better restaurants and genuine character. Dinner at Bacchanal Butcher on Dauphine Street for their house-made charcuterie and wine list. Spend an afternoon at the Preservation Hall Foundation or catch live jazz on Frenchmen Street, which will give you the musical context for understanding why New Orleans crowds demand what they do. Walk through the Backstreet Cultural Museum to see the real history of the city's brass bands and Mardi Gras culture.
