Toadies
House of Blues Cleveland — Cleveland, OH

Toadies emerged from Fort Worth, Texas in the early 90s as part of that wave of alternative rock bands who actually stuck around. They're basically defined by Possum Kingdom, that 1994 single with the murky guitar riff and the weirdly unsettling lyrics about some lake. It became a staple of 90s rock radio almost by accident—people couldn't quite figure out if it was genuinely creepy or just catchy. The band's full-length debut Rubberneck landed in 1997 and confirmed they weren't just a one-hit situation, though Possum Kingdom obviously remains their calling card. After breaking up in 2002, they reformed in 2008 and have been the steady touring type ever since. They've never really reinvented themselves or chased trends. Just a straightforward alternative rock band from Texas who made one genuinely weird song that still holds up.

Toadies shows are competent and committed but not particularly flashy. Crowds show up expecting Possum Kingdom and get a solid set of 90s rock that lands without drama. They've got the chops but aren't trying to blow your mind—just deliver the songs the way people remember them.

Known for Possum Kingdom, Tyler, I Come from the Water, Away

Toadies rolled through House of Blues in October 2022 and delivered the kind of set that reminded you why they've stuck around this long. They opened with 'Little Sin' and 'Polly Jean,' then spent the next hour threading between their bread-and-butter hits and stuff that felt genuinely lived-in. 'Possum Kingdom' landed exactly where you'd expect it—middle of the set, guaranteed crowd moment—but what really landed was hearing 'Away' and 'I Come From the Water' back-to-back, two songs that showed the band knows how to build mood beyond their one-hit status. The encore veered left with 'Life's Been Good' before settling into 'Rattler's Revival' and a cover of 'I Put a Spell on You' that closed things out strange and good. Twenty-two songs across the night felt generous.

Cleveland's got bones in alt-rock. It's a town that remembers when '90s alternative wasn't a novelty, when bands like Toadies fit naturally into the regional landscape. House of Blues sits comfortably in that ecosystem—a venue that understands the difference between a nostalgia show and a band still worth hearing. The city's scene still values craft and authenticity over flash, which is exactly the lane Toadies have always occupied.

Stay in Ohio City, where Victorian brownstones meet serious coffee shops and galleries. Dinner at Fairmount, where chef Jonathon Sawyer sources locally and cooks with real technique—expect seasonal American food that doesn't announce itself. Spend an afternoon at the Cleveland Museum of Art, which is free and genuinely excellent. Walk through the West Side Market before the show, grab something you don't need, and feel the bones of the city. The whole neighborhood has that working-class dignity that makes Cleveland distinct.
