Toadies
Bogart's — Cincinnati, OH

Toadies emerged from Fort Worth, Texas in the early 90s as part of that wave of alternative rock bands who actually stuck around. They're basically defined by Possum Kingdom, that 1994 single with the murky guitar riff and the weirdly unsettling lyrics about some lake. It became a staple of 90s rock radio almost by accident—people couldn't quite figure out if it was genuinely creepy or just catchy. The band's full-length debut Rubberneck landed in 1997 and confirmed they weren't just a one-hit situation, though Possum Kingdom obviously remains their calling card. After breaking up in 2002, they reformed in 2008 and have been the steady touring type ever since. They've never really reinvented themselves or chased trends. Just a straightforward alternative rock band from Texas who made one genuinely weird song that still holds up.

Toadies shows are competent and committed but not particularly flashy. Crowds show up expecting Possum Kingdom and get a solid set of 90s rock that lands without drama. They've got the chops but aren't trying to blow your mind—just deliver the songs the way people remember them.

Known for Possum Kingdom, Tyler, I Come from the Water, Away

Toadies rolled through Madison Theater in October 2022, delivering the kind of set that rewarded longtime fans willing to dig past the obvious. Sure, 'Possum Kingdom' landed in the middle of the night, but the real meat was elsewhere: 'Backslider' and 'I Come From the Water' showed why their catalog runs deeper than one-hit wonder territory, while 'Velvet' and 'I Burn' closed things out with the kind of understated heaviness that defined their best work. Eleven songs in, they'd painted a picture of a band that's never been about flash, just competent, guitar-driven rock that settles into your bones.

Cincinnati's always had a soft spot for bands that don't need to prove anything. The city's rock lineage runs from proto-punk to grunge adjacency, and that sensibility meshes well with Toadies' no-bullshit approach to alt-rock. Madison Theater crowds tend to appreciate substance over spectacle, which is exactly what this band brings. It's the kind of room where a deep cut like 'Backslider' lands harder than most songs do on bigger stages.

Stay in Hyde Park, Cincinnati's most elegant neighborhood, with tree-lined streets and restored Victorian homes. Dinner at The Eagle—a fine dining spot that takes Southern cooking seriously—pairs well with Stapleton's sensibility. Spend your afternoon at the Cincinnati Art Museum or walking the grounds at Spring Grove Cemetery, one of America's most beautiful cemeteries. Both offer quiet reflection before heading to the show. If you have time, catch the view from Skyline Chili's main location; the city panorama is worth the detour, even if the food is divisive.
