About Three Days Grace
Three Days Grace formed in Toronto in the late 90s and hit their stride in the mid-2000s with a brand of radio-friendly alternative rock that connected with people in genuine pain. Their debut album was solid, but it was "One-X" that cemented them as a legitimate force — that's where "I Hate Everything About You" and "Animal I Have Become" came from, songs about self-destruction and rage that somehow made it onto mainstream rock radio without feeling compromised. They've been remarkably consistent over two decades, releasing albums every few years without chasing trends or trying to reinvent themselves dramatically. If you've ever heard an alternative rock song about depression, self-harm, or emotional damage on the radio between 2005 and 2015, there's a solid chance it was them or it was heavily influenced by them. Adam Gontier left and came back, Matt Walst took over vocals, but the formula held. They're proof that you don't need to be innovative to be effective.
Their shows are legitimately intense. The crowd gets loud, sing-alongs are massive, and there's a real cathartic energy — people are working through something, and Three Days Grace meets them there. They're efficient, professional, rarely bad.

Three Days Grace + Hartford
Three Days Grace rolled through Hartford's XFINITY Theatre in August 2019 with the kind of setlist that balanced their biggest moments against deeper catalog cuts. They opened with 'The Mountain' and built momentum through 'Home' and 'The Good Life' before hitting the harder material—'Pain,' 'Infra-Red,' and 'Break' showed why the band's post-grunge angst still resonates. The crowd got what they came for with 'I Hate Everything About You' and 'Animal I Have Become,' but closing with 'Riot' felt like the right move, sending people out with something that felt both anthemic and pointed. It was a solid, no-frills performance from a band that knows exactly what they do.

Live Music in Hartford
Hartford's venue landscape has always been built more for touring acts than homegrown rock stars, and that's actually worked in its favor. The city's audiences are unpretentious—they show up for the music, not the mystique. Bands like Three Days Grace, who traffic in straightforward emotional heaviness and stadium-sized hooks, have found reliable ground here. There's a throughline connecting the rock crowds that came of age in the 2000s to the ones still catching these bands now.
Hartford road trip to see Three Days Grace?
Stay in the West End neighborhood—it's got actual character and puts you near some decent restaurants. Head to Saluto for Italian that doesn't oversell itself, or The Sycamore for New American food done properly. Before the show, walk through Bushnell Park and check out the Elizabeth Park conservatory if the weather cooperates. After, grab a drink at Vaughan's Public House if you want to decompress somewhere that feels lived-in rather than designed. The Wadsworth Atheneum is worth an hour if you have time to kill during the day.
