The Romantics
MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre at the FL State Fairgrounds — Tampa, FL

The Romantics formed in Detroit in 1977, hitting their stride when new wave and punk were still figuring out how to coexist. They made lean, efficient rock songs that did one thing really well: get stuck in your head. Talking in Your Sleep became their signature, a track so perfectly constructed it sounds like it should have been on the radio for decades before it actually was. What I Like About You came later and proved they weren't one-hit material—it's just as catchy, just as direct. Their whole thing was stripping things down. No excess, no pretense. They weren't reinventing rock, they were reminding people why the basic formula works. The band broke up in the 80s, reunited, broke up again, and came back once more because some songs are hard to let go of. If you've heard their stuff, you probably didn't realize how much of it you knew.

Their shows are straightforward and efficient. Crowds sing every word back to them, particularly during Talking in Your Sleep. There's a lot of movement in the room but it's loose, not mosh-pit intense. They play tight, don't waste time, and clearly enjoy the fact that people still show up.

The Romantics have a loose history with Tampa, showing up occasionally when the touring circuit brings them through Florida. Their last visit was October 26, 2017 at The Dirty Shame, where they did what they do best: lean into the new wave-pop catalog that's kept them relevant since the early '80s. The setlist hit the obvious marks—"What I Like About You" got its obligatory play—but the real draw was watching a band that still understands the economy of a three-minute song. They didn't overstay their welcome, and the crowd didn't need them to.

Tampa's music scene tilts toward hip-hop and Latin influences, which means a classic new wave pop band like The Romantics occupies a specific niche here. The city's live venues tend to favor younger acts and local acts, so when legacy bands roll through, they're often playing to a mix of nostalgia seekers and curious onlookers. It's not the most natural fit, but that's partly what makes it interesting.

Skip the strip and head to Hyde Park, Tampa's most livable neighborhood with tree-lined streets, independent shops, and genuine character. Stay nearby and eat at The Bricks of Hyde Park for elevated Southern cuisine in a refurbished historic building. Spend an afternoon at the Dali Museum in nearby St. Petersburg—it's legitimately world-class and a solid hour drive but worth it. Walk along Bayshore Boulevard at sunset before the show. The whole vibe is understated enough that Johnson will feel like the most exciting thing happening all weekend.
