The Neighbourhood
T-Mobile Center — Kansas City, MO

The Neighbourhood started in Newbury Park, California as Jesse Rutherford's bedroom project before expanding into a full band. They broke through with the 2013 single 'Sweater Weather,' a song so ubiquitous it became inescapable—streaming billions of times across platforms. The band's sound blends lo-fi indie rock with hip-hop influences and moody introspection, creating something that feels deliberately understated. Their debut album I Love You came out in 2013 and established their aesthetic: distorted guitars, anxiety-ridden lyrics, and production that sounds like it was recorded in someone's basement even when it wasn't. 'Daddy Issues' and 'Alligator' solidified their cult following among people who appreciated their refusal to sound polished. They've never quite reached stadium status despite the streaming numbers, which feels right for a band that seems genuinely uncomfortable with excess attention.

Their shows are intimate even in bigger venues—lots of phone cameras, swaying crowds, people mouthing every word to 'Sweater Weather' despite the song's ironic detachment. Energy is moody rather than explosive, with moments of real tension during the heavier tracks.

Known for Sweater Weather, Daddy Issues, Alligator, Hell, Softcore

The Neighbourhood last came through Kansas City in November 2019, setting up at the Midland for a pretty solid night. They leaned into the deeper cuts early—"Middle of Somewhere" and "Lost in Translation" got things moving before pivoting to the obvious crowd-pleasers like "Daddy Issues" and "Sweater Weather." The real moment came somewhere in the middle when they dug into "Void" and "Prey," songs that hit different live. They closed out with "Stuck With Me," which felt right for a band that's always been more interested in the spaces between the big hooks than the hooks themselves.

Kansas City has always been a city that respects introspection in its music, from the jazz standard to the indie rock present. The Neighbourhood's brand of dark, atmospheric alternative pop finds natural ground here—there's an audience for bands that don't need to yell to be heard. The Midland itself has become the city's go-to venue for acts that treat a show like a conversation rather than a spectacle.

Stay in Midtown, where the neighborhood has a real rhythm to it beyond just the venue. Hit up Betty Rae's for upscale barbecue that actually justifies the hype, then walk it off exploring the galleries and vintage shops along Baltimore. Catch a show at the Truman or Liberty Hall depending on the size, but leave time to visit Union Station—it's legitimately one of the finest Beaux-Arts buildings in the country, and worth seeing even if you're just passing through. The Power and Light District is there if you want drinks after, but Midtown's got better bones.
