Piano-driven rock from Denver that peaked right when Grey's Anatomy needed a song to play over someone flatlining. Isaac Slade wrote hooks that sounded enormous on cheap car speakers. If you know the words to How to Save a Life but can't explain why, that's the whole point.

Polished and earnest. The piano hits harder in person than you'd expect. Crowds go dead quiet during the verses and lose it on the choruses.

Known for How to Save a Life, Over My Head (Cable Car), You Found Me, Never Say Never, Look After You

The Fray returned to The Truman in October to remind Kansas City why they've always been more than just "How to Save a Life." They worked through the setlist with the kind of precision that comes from years of doing this, pulling deep cuts like "Rainy Zurich" and "Ungodly Hour" alongside the expected "Over My Head (Cable Car)" and "You Found Me." The encore—closing with "How to Save a Life"—felt earned rather than obligatory, a band comfortable with their catalog and their place in it.

Kansas City's music landscape has always supported thoughtful rock and alternative acts. Beyond the blues legacy, the city developed a solid indie and alternative scene with venues that book substantial touring acts. The Fray's introspective, emotionally direct approach fits naturally into a market that's never been interested in flash over substance.

Stay in Midtown, where the neighborhood has a real rhythm to it beyond just the venue. Hit up Betty Rae's for upscale barbecue that actually justifies the hype, then walk it off exploring the galleries and vintage shops along Baltimore. Catch a show at the Truman or Liberty Hall depending on the size, but leave time to visit Union Station—it's legitimately one of the finest Beaux-Arts buildings in the country, and worth seeing even if you're just passing through. The Power and Light District is there if you want drinks after, but Midtown's got better bones.
