The Fray
Everwise Amphitheater at White River State Park — Indianapolis, IN

Piano-driven rock from Denver that peaked right when Grey's Anatomy needed a song to play over someone flatlining. Isaac Slade wrote hooks that sounded enormous on cheap car speakers. If you know the words to How to Save a Life but can't explain why, that's the whole point.

Polished and earnest. The piano hits harder in person than you'd expect. Crowds go dead quiet during the verses and lose it on the choruses.

Known for How to Save a Life, Over My Head (Cable Car), You Found Me, Never Say Never, Look After You

The Fray touched down at Holliday Park on August 14th, and it felt like a band still mining their catalog with purpose. They walked through the obvious touchstones—"How to Save a Life" hit like it always does—but the real moment came when they pulled out "Dead Wrong" and "My Heart's a Crowded Room," songs that let you remember why these guys mattered beyond one or two singles. "I Saw the Light" closed things out, which felt appropriate for a band that's been doing this long enough to know what actually lands. Indianapolis has seen plenty of mid-2000s rock acts come through, but The Fray still sounds like they mean it.

Indianapolis has a quiet but resilient rock tradition. Beyond the mainstream arena acts, the city supports solid mid-tier venues and a base of fans loyal to guitar-driven alternative rock. While the scene isn't known for breaking major acts, it's proven itself a stable market for established touring bands. The city punches above its weight in supporting live music across genres.

Stay in Fountain Square, the neighborhood with actual character—tree-lined streets, galleries, and the kind of restaurants that don't need to try too hard. Dinner at Bluebeard is the right call: meticulous food, interesting wine list, the sort of place that respects both craft and restraint. Spend the afternoon at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, which is legitimately excellent and free. Walk around the Canal, catch whatever's happening at the Vogue or Murat depending on the venue, then hit Mass Ave afterward for drinks at a place like Chatterbox or The Rathskeller. It's a short trip that doesn't feel rushed.
