About The Cab
The Cab formed in Las Vegas in the mid-2000s as part of that wave of pop-punk bands who weren't afraid of synths and dance-floor ambitions. They made their name with a sound that split the difference between the melodic urgency of Fall Out Boy and the club-ready hooks of The Sounds. Their debut album 'Whisper Campaign' came out in 2008 and established them as the kind of band who could write genuinely catchy songs without sacrificing any rock credibility. Songs like 'La Di Da' became internet favorites before that was a coherent marketing strategy, just because people genuinely liked hearing them. They've maintained a steady presence on the pop-punk circuit ever since, never quite reaching arena headliner status but consistently delivering solid records and shows. The band's strength has always been in their hooks and the way they layer synths into what could've been standard rock songs, making everything feel a little brighter and weirder than expected.
Their shows are compact and deliberate. The crowd knows the words and isn't shy about it. There's a real dance-rock energy rather than the typical mosh pit intensity, people actually moving and singing along rather than just thrashing. They lean into the synth-pop side of their sound live, which gives things an almost New Wave charge.

The Cab + Tampa
The Cab last touched down in Tampa at The Orpheum back in August 2009, right when the Vegas pop-punk outfit was riding high on Sinema. The setlist that night probably leaned into their sharper, catchier material—the kind of songs that made them stand out in a scene crowded with screamo bands trying to figure out melody. By then they'd already established themselves as the smart kids at the pop-punk table, all angular guitars and deadpan vocals wrapped around hooks that stuck around long after you left the venue. Tampa crowds tend to appreciate that sort of thing: bands that don't take themselves too seriously but clearly know what they're doing.

Live Music in Tampa
Tampa's always been a place where pop-punk and emo found footing alongside a broader rock tradition. In the late 2000s, when The Cab were touring, the city had developed a taste for bands that blended punk energy with pop sensibilities and weren't afraid of keyboards or electronic touches. The Orpheum crowd knew what they were getting with The Cab—technically tight, lyrically clever, and committed to the kind of indie-leaning pop-rock that felt fresher than the standard emo formula.
Tampa road trip to see The Cab?
Skip the strip and head to Hyde Park, Tampa's most livable neighborhood with tree-lined streets, independent shops, and genuine character. Stay nearby and eat at The Bricks of Hyde Park for elevated Southern cuisine in a refurbished historic building. Spend an afternoon at the Dali Museum in nearby St. Petersburg—it's legitimately world-class and a solid hour drive but worth it. Walk along Bayshore Boulevard at sunset before the show. The whole vibe is understated enough that Johnson will feel like the most exciting thing happening all weekend.
