About Testament
Testament formed in 1983 in the Bay Area thrash scene, starting as Legacy before changing their name in 1986. They've spent four decades doing what most bands would consider the hard way: refusing to soften their approach, cycling through lineup changes, and still releasing albums that sound like Testament rather than chasing whatever metal was doing that year. Chuck Billy took over vocals in 1990 and became the face of the band through their most commercially successful period in the early 90s, particularly with Practice What You Preach and The Ritual. They've always been the thinking person's thrash band, heavier on the technical riffing than pure chaos. Testament never quite reached the household name status of Metallica or Slayer, which somehow made their catalog feel more honest. They've done reunion tours, experimented with darker production, and generally kept their standards high enough that fans trust new Testament records in a way they don't trust most legacy bands.
Testament shows are straightforward metal violence. The pit gets immediately chaotic and stays that way. Chuck Billy commands the stage with clear authority, and the band locks in tight enough that even newer material hits as hard as the classics. Crowds are there to get hit.

Testament + Hartford
Testament rolled through Hartford in September 2022, hitting Webster Theater with the kind of setlist that rewarded longtime fans. They opened with "Rise Up" and spent two hours pulling from across their catalog—"Practice What You Preach" landed exactly where it should, but the real moments were the deep cuts. "D.N.R. (Do Not Resuscitate)" and "Native Blood" showed they weren't just cycling through the obvious songs. "Into the Pit" closed things out, which felt right for a band that's been a reliable presence in thrash metal for decades. This wasn't a farewell tour or a greatest-hits victory lap. It was Testament doing what they do.

Live Music in Hartford
Hartford's metal scene has always been smaller than Boston or New York, but it's sustained itself through bands that actually show up. Testament fits that ethos—straightforward, working-band energy. The city's venues have hosted plenty of touring metal acts over the years, and Webster Theater remains the go-to room for bands of Testament's stature. There's not much of a local thrash metal ecosystem to speak of, but when established acts like this come through, people actually attend.
Hartford road trip to see Testament?
Stay in the West End neighborhood—it's got actual character and puts you near some decent restaurants. Head to Saluto for Italian that doesn't oversell itself, or The Sycamore for New American food done properly. Before the show, walk through Bushnell Park and check out the Elizabeth Park conservatory if the weather cooperates. After, grab a drink at Vaughan's Public House if you want to decompress somewhere that feels lived-in rather than designed. The Wadsworth Atheneum is worth an hour if you have time to kill during the day.
