About Sugar
Sugar is the indie rock project of guitarist/vocalist Ryan Adams, existing as both a full band and a vehicle for Adams to step back from the weight of his own mythology. The project emerged in the late 90s as a way to explore lighter, more pop-oriented songwriting alongside the darker introspection Adams had become known for. Songs like 'Bones' showcase a melodic sensibility that strips away pretense—just clean hooks and honest arrangements. Sugar records tend toward brighter production and more collaborative energy than Adams' solo work, with a rotating cast of players that shifts the sonic texture from album to album. The band manages the trick of sounding effortless while remaining precisely crafted, which is harder than it looks. Fans of the project tend to appreciate it as either a palate cleanser from Adams' heavier material or as evidence that underneath the tortured artist persona is someone genuinely interested in writing a great three-minute song.
Sugar shows are smaller, tighter affairs where the hooks actually land. Crowds are mix of longtime Adams devotees and people who just want to hear straightforward rock songs played well. The energy is conversational rather than reverential—people actually talk between songs, and nobody minds.

Sugar + Detroit
Sugar's last Detroit appearance came in August 2025 at Downtown Royal Oak, where they moved through a setlist that balanced their harder edges with moments of restraint. "Words to Me" opened things up, followed by the kind of mid-tempo pull that defines their best work—"Someday" and "Every Morning" landed with the weight of songs that have traveled well over time. The real reveal came midway through when they pivoted to "Blister in the Sun," a cover that shouldn't work but does, proof that Sugar understands how to own a song that isn't theirs. They closed out with "Fly," which felt earned rather than obligatory. Ten songs, no filler, the kind of set that respects both the band's catalog and the people who showed up.

Live Music in Detroit
Detroit's relationship with guitar-driven rock is foundational—it's Motown's shadow and its backbone. The city's current scene thrives on that legacy without being trapped by it, blending the precision of '80s post-punk with the rawer impulses of garage rock. Sugar fits naturally into this landscape, where technical proficiency and emotional restraint aren't at odds. The smaller venues like Royal Oak have become crucial outposts for bands that refuse to play the nostalgia game, where audiences still care about how a song is constructed.
Detroit road trip to see Sugar?
Stay in Corktown, where vintage buildings and independent shops give the neighborhood actual character. Dinner at Selden Standard for refined cooking that doesn't announce itself. Spend an afternoon at the Detroit Institute of Arts—the murals and permanent collection justify the trip alone, and the building itself is worth the walk. The city's music history lives in these spaces. Catch the show, then grab late drinks somewhere on Michigan Avenue. You'll understand why Detroit crowds expect rigor from their musicians.
