Steel Panther is a Los Angeles-based glam metal band that treats the genre with both reverence and comedy. They're serious musicians playing unserious music about partying, women, and other metal staples, but they execute it with genuine musicianship. The band includes Satchel on guitar, Michael Starr on vocals, Lexxi Foxx on bass, and Stix Zadinia on drums. They've been active since the early 2000s, building a cult following by nailing the sound and look of 1980s hair metal while maintaining a winking distance from it. Albums like 'Feel the Steel' and 'Lower the Bar' showcase their ability to write genuinely catchy hooks while keeping the humor front and center. They're not trying to save rock or make a statement. They're just making songs about strippers and cocaine with killer guitar solos.

Steel Panther shows are packed with devoted metalheads who come for the guitar work and stay for the absurdity. The crowd sings along to every word, doesn't care that they're being mocked, and actively participates in the chaos. Starr works the stage like he's at the Sunset Strip in 1987. It's high-energy, sweaty, and genuinely fun.

Steel Panther rolled through The Fillmore Silver Spring in December 2024, and the place was locked in for what amounted to a masterclass in sleaze metal theater. They opened with "Eyes of a Panther" and immediately made clear this wasn't a nostalgia lap — these guys still know how to work a room. The setlist hit the expected marks ("Death to All but Metal" closing things out) but also dug into the vault with "Eatin' Ain't Cheatin'" and "17 Girls in a Row," which got the kind of recognition that only comes from people who actually care about this band. A guitar solo tucked into the middle of the set gave room for some instrumental theatrics. Thirteen songs, zero apologies.

Live Music in Washington DC

DC has never been a natural fit for hair metal, sleaze, or any flavor of unapologetic excess. The city tends toward post-punk, go-go, and indie rock — music with some intellectual spine. But Steel Panther thrives on that friction, on being the dumb joke that's too well-executed to dismiss. When a band this committed to parody shows up in a town this serious about music, something interesting happens. The audience gets to enjoy both the craft and the absurdity without pretending one negates the other.

Stay in Georgetown or Capitol Hill, both walkable neighborhoods with excellent restaurants and bars.
