About Spin Doctors
Spin Doctors formed in the early 90s and became the kind of band that soundtracked a specific moment before mostly disappearing from the conversation. Two Princes was everywhere in 1991—that jangly, slightly smug guitar riff and the whole thing about choosing between two women became their permanent calling card. They made catchy pop-rock with funk influences, the kind of music that felt clever at the time. Little Miss Can't Be Wrong showed they could do the formula again. The band had decent chemistry and weren't trying to be heavy or pretentious, which was refreshing but also limited what they could do. They broke up, reunited, broke up again. Now they tour as a nostalgia act, which is fine. People know Two Princes and not much else, and that's probably the most honest thing about them.
Their shows are pretty straightforward. Crowd knows Two Princes and sings along hard. Energy is fun but not intense—people are there for a solid set of 90s pop-rock, not transcendence. Decent musicians, decent time. Nothing revelatory.

Spin Doctors + Kansas City
Spin Doctors have a loose relationship with Kansas City, treating it like a venue to pass through rather than a second home. Their last stop was October 2022 at Ameristar Casino, where they ran through the hits but didn't phone it in—they opened with "What Time Is It?" and spent five songs hitting the dopamine buttons. "Two Princes" and "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" got their due, but it was "Still a Gorilla" and "Jimmy Olsen's Blues" that showed they still remember how to play deeper into their catalog. Nothing revolutionary, nothing surprising, but competent enough for a Thursday night.

Live Music in Kansas City
Kansas City has a deep blues and jazz pedigree that doesn't naturally align with the Spin Doctors' college-rock-adjacent vibe. The city's music scene leans heavily on its legacy—Pendergast-era jazz, Charlie Parker, orchestral ambition. The Spin Doctors' brand of '90s funk-lite and straightforward pop-rock sits awkwardly in that context, which might explain why they don't seem to tour here with any particular frequency.
Kansas City road trip to see Spin Doctors?
Stay in Midtown, where the neighborhood has a real rhythm to it beyond just the venue. Hit up Betty Rae's for upscale barbecue that actually justifies the hype, then walk it off exploring the galleries and vintage shops along Baltimore. Catch a show at the Truman or Liberty Hall depending on the size, but leave time to visit Union Station—it's legitimately one of the finest Beaux-Arts buildings in the country, and worth seeing even if you're just passing through. The Power and Light District is there if you want drinks after, but Midtown's got better bones.
