About Soulfly

Soulfly is Max Cavalera's post-Sepultura project, launched in 1997 as a vehicle for his increasingly experimental approach to heavy music. Where Sepultura was structured and precise, Soulfly leaned into primal groove and world music influences—particularly Brazilian percussion and indigenous sounds. The self-titled debut established the template: massive riffs wrapped around tribal rhythms and Cavalera's unhinged vocal approach. Over two decades, Soulfly cycled through various sounds—industrial flirtations, straight thrash, even straight-up noise—but always maintained that core identity of controlled chaos.
