About Soen
Soen is a Swedish progressive metal band that emerged in 2012, fronted by vocalist Joel Ekelöf. They occupy the space where progressive rock's intricate songwriting meets modern metal's heaviness, without leaning too hard into either direction. Their self-titled debut established them as thoughtful musicians interested in atmosphere and dynamics as much as technical prowess. Over subsequent albums like Lykaia and Lotus, they've refined a sound that's cerebral without being pretentious—complex arrangements that still stick with you. Soen doesn't shout about what they're doing musically. They just do it, which is probably why they've built a devoted following among people who want substance in their metal.
Soen plays with visible precision. Crowds are attentive and quiet between songs, which shouldn't happen at metal shows but does here. Ekelöf commands the room without histrionics. The band locks in tight, and you notice the arrangements you might've missed on record.

Soen + Cleveland
Soen rolled through The Roxy at Mahall's in May 2024, delivering a setlist that showed they're comfortable moving beyond their heavier moments. They opened with "Sincere" and wove through their catalog with precision—"Martyrs" and "Savia" early on, then leaning into some of their more introspective material with "Memorial" and "Modesty" mid-set. The band closed with "Violence," which felt like the right way to end things. Cleveland doesn't see Soen super often, which makes their appearances feel like events rather than routine stops. The Roxy crowd seemed engaged throughout, especially during "Jinn" and "Antagonist," tracks that hit differently in a room that size.

Live Music in Cleveland
Cleveland's metal and progressive rock scene has always punched above its weight. The city's got a deep history with heavy music—from early doom influence to modern prog—and venues like The Roxy keep that thread alive. Soen fits naturally into this world: they're not quite metal, not quite anything else, which is exactly what Cleveland audiences seem to appreciate. There's a patience here for bands that refuse to be categorized, and Soen's cerebral approach to rhythm and structure resonates with the kind of listeners this city attracts.
