About Soen
Soen is a Swedish progressive metal band that emerged in 2012, fronted by vocalist Joel Ekelöf. They occupy the space where progressive rock's intricate songwriting meets modern metal's heaviness, without leaning too hard into either direction. Their self-titled debut established them as thoughtful musicians interested in atmosphere and dynamics as much as technical prowess. Over subsequent albums like Lykaia and Lotus, they've refined a sound that's cerebral without being pretentious—complex arrangements that still stick with you. Soen doesn't shout about what they're doing musically. They just do it, which is probably why they've built a devoted following among people who want substance in their metal.
Soen plays with visible precision. Crowds are attentive and quiet between songs, which shouldn't happen at metal shows but does here. Ekelöf commands the room without histrionics. The band locks in tight, and you notice the arrangements you might've missed on record.

Soen + Charlotte
Soen rolled through Charlotte in May 2024, hitting The Underground with the kind of precision you'd expect from a band that's spent years perfecting their progressive metal craft. They worked through material that spans their catalog, pulling from the heavier end of their songwriting while maintaining the compositional sophistication that separates them from standard metal fare. The setlist leaned into their more intricate passages, letting the band stretch into the kind of instrumental passages that justify the progressive tag. They closed things out with an encore that reminded the room why people keep showing up for Soen shows—the technical chops are real, but they never let technique override songwriting.

Live Music in Charlotte
Charlotte's metal scene tends toward the practical rather than pretentious, which suits Soen fine. The city has developed a solid foundation for heavier music over the past decade, with venues like The Underground serving as reliable stops for touring bands on the progressive and metal circuits. It's not a scene obsessed with gatekeeping or subcultural purity—just people who appreciate bands that can actually play their instruments. Soen fits that vibe naturally.
