About Rainbow Kitten Surprise
Rainbow Kitten Surprise is the project of Toby Halbrooks, a Tennessee-based musician who builds dense, textured indie rock songs out of contradictions. His vocals snap between whispered vulnerability and unhinged intensity, sometimes in the same verse. The band's earlier work leaned heavier, but albums like How to: Friend, Love, Freefall showed a songwriter comfortable sitting in discomfort—balancing bedroom pop sensibilities with jagged guitar work and genuinely strange production choices. They've developed a cult following partly because nothing about them feels calculated. The music is weird in a way that suggests genuine conviction rather than affectation, and fans respond to that refusal to be easily categorized.
Shows are genuinely unhinged in the best way. Halbrooks is completely unselfconscious on stage, the crowd swings between singing every word and standing silent in confusion. Energy feels unpredictable—sometimes intimate, sometimes chaotic. People are genuinely invested.

Rainbow Kitten Surprise + Norfolk
Rainbow Kitten Surprise brought their particular brand of controlled chaos to The NorVa in April 2022, running through a 24-song set that moved between the intimate and the expansive. They opened with "All That and More (Sailboat)" and spent the night threading together deep cuts like "Moody Orange" and "When It Lands" alongside fan staples. "Cocaine Jesus" hit different in that room, and by the time they closed with "Run," the crowd had been through something. It's the kind of show that sticks with people—messy, precise, and impossible to look away from.

Live Music in Norfolk
Norfolk's music landscape has always had room for the weird and the unclassifiable. The city's venues like The NorVa have built a reputation for hosting artists who blur genre lines, and RKS fits squarely into that tradition. Their blend of aggressive instrumentation with vulnerable songwriting appeals to a crowd that wants music with edges and substance—the kind of audience Norfolk tends to attract and keep.
Norfolk road trip to see Rainbow Kitten Surprise?
Stay in the Ghent neighborhood — it's got actual character with tree-lined streets and converted warehouses. Dinner at Commune, which does locally-sourced food without the pretense. After the show, grab late-night food at d'Egg in Ocean View. Spend a day at the Chrysler Museum of Art if you want something substantial, or walk the waterfront at Town Point Park. Norfolk's food scene has gotten genuinely good in the last five years. The military history is everywhere if you're interested in that angle too.
