About Rainbow Kitten Surprise
Rainbow Kitten Surprise is the project of Toby Halbrooks, a Tennessee-based musician who builds dense, textured indie rock songs out of contradictions. His vocals snap between whispered vulnerability and unhinged intensity, sometimes in the same verse. The band's earlier work leaned heavier, but albums like How to: Friend, Love, Freefall showed a songwriter comfortable sitting in discomfort—balancing bedroom pop sensibilities with jagged guitar work and genuinely strange production choices. They've developed a cult following partly because nothing about them feels calculated. The music is weird in a way that suggests genuine conviction rather than affectation, and fans respond to that refusal to be easily categorized.
Shows are genuinely unhinged in the best way. Halbrooks is completely unselfconscious on stage, the crowd swings between singing every word and standing silent in confusion. Energy feels unpredictable—sometimes intimate, sometimes chaotic. People are genuinely invested.

Rainbow Kitten Surprise + Austin
Rainbow Kitten Surprise brought their particular brand of controlled chaos to Zilker Park in October 2025, moving through a setlist that leaned on the deeper cuts that make their live shows feel less like concerts and more like shared fever dreams. They opened with "Hide" and kept the momentum unsettling throughout — "Cocaine Jesus" and "Devil Like Me" hit different in the open air, while "Tropics" and "When It Lands" showed they're not just about the noise. Closing with "It's Called: Freefall" felt deliberate, like they'd figured out exactly where they wanted to leave everyone.

Live Music in Austin
Austin's music scene thrives on artists who refuse easy categorization, and RKS fits that mold perfectly. The city's indie and alternative crowds have always gravitated toward bands that blend psychedelia, folk sensibilities, and raw emotional unraveling — exactly what Rainbow Kitten Surprise delivers. Between the established venues and festival circuits like Zilker's capacity for experimental acts, Austin remains one of those places where a band can be genuinely weird and still find their people.
Austin road trip to see Rainbow Kitten Surprise?
Stay in East Austin, where you'll find better restaurants and a neighborhood that actually feels alive. Dinner at Suerte—confident, creative food in a space that doesn't try too hard. During the day, wander the galleries and vintage shops along East 6th, or head to Zilker Park to sit with a coffee and watch Austin be itself. If you've got time, catch live music at Mohawk or Hotel Vegas—smaller rooms where you can see how Austin's songwriting community actually operates. The city's best asset isn't any single thing; it's the density of good people doing interesting work.
