About PURITY RING
Purity Ring is the electronic project of Megan James and Corin Roddick, formed in 2010 in Montreal. They built a reputation with their debut album Shrines, which paired ethereal, processed vocals with intricate synth arrangements that felt both delicate and unsettling. James's voice—often heavily layered and treated—became the project's signature, floating over hypnotic beats and shimmering production that drew comparisons to Grimes and FKA twigs. Their follow-up Another Eternity pushed toward pop accessibility while keeping the experimental edge intact. Purity Ring doesn't really fit neatly anywhere, which is kind of the point. Their sound sits in the space between ambient music and pop structure, where nothing feels quite warm but nothing's cold either. It's the kind of music that sounds better the more you pay attention.
Their shows are precise and hypnotic rather than explosive. The crowd stands relatively still, almost meditative, watching dense visual projections while James delivers those processed vocals with palpable control. It's less about collective euphoria and more about sustained atmosphere. People seem transfixed.

PURITY RING + St. Louis
Purity Ring doesn't play St. Louis constantly, but when they do, they come thorough. Their last visit was June 2022 at Red Flag, where they stretched into a 21-song set that moved through their catalog with real precision. They opened with the glitchy percussion of "pink lightning" and "soshy," then dug into the synth-pop architecture of "Obedear" and "Push Pull." The deeper cuts landed hard—"vehemence" and "sinew" showed why fans stick around beyond the radio material. They closed out the main set with "graves" and "Begin Again," songs that feel like endings even when they're not. Red Flag's intimate setup probably made the crystalline production hit different than a larger room would've.

Live Music in St. Louis
St. Louis has a lean toward heavier and blues-rooted sounds, but the city's underground electronic and experimental scene keeps its own hours. Purity Ring fits into that smaller, devoted orbit—the kind of artist who draws the people actually paying attention to production and texture rather than just names. Venues like Red Flag tend to attract that crowd: people who show up for a 21-song deep dive and leave satisfied with what they got.
St. Louis road trip to see PURITY RING?
Base yourself in the Central West End, where the tree-lined streets and converted lofts give the neighborhood a genuinely livable vibe. Hit Broadway Oyster Bar for something with actual character, or Park Avenue Coffee if you need to ease in. Spend an afternoon at the City Museum—it's genuinely weird and worth your time, not a tourist trap. The Pulitzer Arts Foundation is also worth an hour if contemporary art is your thing. St. Louis takes itself less seriously than most cities, which makes it easy to move around and find decent food without overthinking it.
