About PURITY RING
Purity Ring is the electronic project of Megan James and Corin Roddick, formed in 2010 in Montreal. They built a reputation with their debut album Shrines, which paired ethereal, processed vocals with intricate synth arrangements that felt both delicate and unsettling. James's voice—often heavily layered and treated—became the project's signature, floating over hypnotic beats and shimmering production that drew comparisons to Grimes and FKA twigs. Their follow-up Another Eternity pushed toward pop accessibility while keeping the experimental edge intact. Purity Ring doesn't really fit neatly anywhere, which is kind of the point. Their sound sits in the space between ambient music and pop structure, where nothing feels quite warm but nothing's cold either. It's the kind of music that sounds better the more you pay attention.
Their shows are precise and hypnotic rather than explosive. The crowd stands relatively still, almost meditative, watching dense visual projections while James delivers those processed vocals with palpable control. It's less about collective euphoria and more about sustained atmosphere. People seem transfixed.

PURITY RING + Austin
Purity Ring has maintained a quiet presence in Austin over the years, with the electronic duo's most recent visit coming in November 2025 at ACL Live at The Moody Theater. The setlist balanced material from their 1015 catalog—the hypnotic production of "Fineshrine" and the sparse beauty of "Sextou" sat comfortably alongside newer work. What struck most was how their intricate synth architecture translated to a live setting, those interlocking vocal layers and crystalline arrangements filling the venue with an almost physical presence. The encore provided just enough to remind you why Purity Ring's brand of meticulously crafted electronic pop continues to resonate.

Live Music in Austin
Austin's music scene thrives on live performance, but electronic and synth-pop acts like Purity Ring occupy a particular space here—respected and attended, but never quite the main event. The city's infrastructure handles the genre capably; venues like ACL Live provide sophisticated sound systems that do justice to intricate production. Still, Austin remains fundamentally a guitar town, which means artists working primarily in synthesizers and digital production tend to play smaller, more dedicated crowds. It's an audience that knows what it came for.
Austin road trip to see PURITY RING?
Stay in East Austin, where you'll find better restaurants and a neighborhood that actually feels alive. Dinner at Suerte—confident, creative food in a space that doesn't try too hard. During the day, wander the galleries and vintage shops along East 6th, or head to Zilker Park to sit with a coffee and watch Austin be itself. If you've got time, catch live music at Mohawk or Hotel Vegas—smaller rooms where you can see how Austin's songwriting community actually operates. The city's best asset isn't any single thing; it's the density of good people doing interesting work.
