About Overkill
Overkill is a thrash metal band from New Jersey that's been consistently loud since 1980. They're one of the few bands from the original wave who never broke up, which says something about their work ethic if nothing else. Their sound is straightforward thrash with the kind of production that lets every guitar riff land hard. Bobby Blitz's vocals are an acquired taste—aggressively nasal, impossible to ignore. Albums like Ironbound and Feel the Fire showcase a band that never got precious about their formula, just kept refining the brutality. They've released enough records to fill a decent-sized discography, and most of them don't embarrass them. Overkill exists in that sweet spot where they're respected enough by metal heads to keep touring constantly, but unknown enough to a general audience that their shows feel like they're for people who actually care about thrash metal. They treat every venue like it matters.
Overkill shows move. No tuning breaks, minimal talking, just sustained aggression for ninety minutes. The pit is serious but not violent. Blitz's voice cuts through everything live. These crowds are there specifically for this band, not just passing through.

Overkill + Denver
Overkill rolled through Denver on November 14, 2024 at Mission Ballroom with the kind of setlist that rewards people who've been paying attention. They opened with 'Scorched' and spent the evening working through material that spans their whole catalog—'Rotten to the Core' and 'The Surgeon' hit like they always do, but the real moment came when they dug into 'Hello From the Gutter' and 'Ironbound,' songs that feel heavier in a room than they do anywhere else. They closed out with 'Fuck You,' which is exactly the kind of punctuation mark a band like this would land on. It was a tight eight-song set that proved you don't need to run long when you know what you're doing.

Live Music in Denver
Denver's metal scene has always had bones—the altitude seems to make everything louder, or maybe it's just the kind of people who show up. The city's thrash tradition runs deep enough that when a band like Overkill comes through, there's actual history in the room. Mission Ballroom sits right in that sweet spot where serious metalheads and curious newcomers both feel at home, which is probably why it's become the venue of choice for this kind of show.
Denver road trip to see Overkill?
Stay in Highland, where tree-lined streets and independent bookstores make it feel like you're actually in Denver rather than passing through. Eat at Frasca Food and Wine if you want to understand why Colorado takes its ingredients seriously—it's fine dining without pretense. Before the show, spend an afternoon at the Denver Art Museum's contemporary wing, which often has installations that match the visual language of experimental music. Walk around Santa Fe Drive's gallery district. It's the kind of neighborhood where the art and music scenes actually talk to each other.
