Lynyrd Skynyrd basically invented Southern rock in Jacksonville, Florida in the late 1960s. They built their reputation on three-guitar harmonies and Ronnie Van Zant's raw, bluesy vocals that sounded like he'd lived a hundred rough years. Free Bird became their masterpiece—a song that proved rock could be both massively popular and genuinely ambitious, anchored by one of the most recognizable guitar solos ever recorded. Sweet Home Alabama cemented them as the South's band, whether people wanted them to be or not. The 1977 plane crash killed Van Zant, Gary Rossington, and Steve Gaines, and basically ended the original band. They've reformed multiple times since, but those early albums from 1973 to 1977 are what made them matter.
