About Helloween
Helloween formed in 1984 in Hamburg and basically invented power metal. The band's early run—particularly the dual-album Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I and II—set the template for everything heavy and fast that came after. Michael Kiske's soaring vocals and the twin guitar attack of Michael Weikath and Roland Grapow made them arena-sized from the start. Songs like "Future World" and "I Want Out" became anthems that defined the genre. The band cycled through vocalists and lineups over the decades, but kept the core mission intact: melodic yet technically relentless metal that never takes itself too seriously. They've been through rough patches and lineup changes, but Helloween's influence on metal is basically foundational at this point.
Helloween crowds are there to sing along to "I Want Out" and lose their minds during the galloping sections. The band plays tight and locked in, trading riffs and harmonies like they've done it a thousand times. Energy stays high but never feels frantic. Fans come prepared.

Helloween + San Antonio
Helloween touched down in San Antonio on January 23, 2004 at White Rabbit, delivering a 15-song set that balanced their catalog's breadth with deep cuts. They opened with "Starlight" and threaded through the essential material—"Keeper of the Seven Keys," "Future World," "Eagle Fly Free"—but also dug into less obvious territory with "Open Your Life" and "Back Against the Wall." The set felt like a band confident enough to let the show breathe beyond the obvious hits, anchoring everything with their signature power metal precision. It was the kind of night that reminded San Antonio why Helloween mattered in metal circles, even if they weren't regulars on the Texas tour circuit.

Live Music in San Antonio
San Antonio's music DNA runs deep through Tex-Mex and country, but the city's metal underbelly has always had room for European power metal. Helloween's theatrical energy and technical precision aligned with what underground venues like White Rabbit were trying to foster—spaces where metal could exist outside the mainstream, where fans who cared about musicianship could gather. The metal community here has never been massive, but it's been passionate, making every Helloween show feel like a notable event rather than just another tour stop.
San Antonio road trip to see Helloween?
Stay in Southtown, where the gallery scene and restored Victorian homes give you something real to walk through between dinner reservations at Cured, which does thoughtful Italian-influenced cooking without pretension. Catch the show, then spend the next morning at Pearl Brewery itself—the district's worth an hour of wandering. The Majestic Theatre or the Tobin Center are your likely venues depending on the tour routing. Head to the McNay Art Museum if you've got afternoon time; it's one of the better regional collections in Texas and won't feel like you're wasting daylight.
