Hellogoodbye
House of Blues Orlando — Orlando, FL

Hellogoodbye formed in 2001 in Huntington Beach, California, with Forrest Kline as the primary creative force. They're best known for their 2006 debut album 'Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!' which spawned the indie pop-punk hit 'Here In Your Arms,' a song that somehow became ubiquitous on MySpace and early YouTube despite its jangling, almost twee sensibilities. The track's infectious energy and Kline's breathy vocals defined a particular strain of mid-2000s pop-punk that was equal parts earnest and ironic. Beyond that one big moment, Hellogoodbye continued churning out albums with diminishing mainstream attention, but maintained a devoted cult following who appreciated Kline's songwriting approach—simultaneously clever and heartfelt, nerdy and romantic. They've become something of a comfort band for millennials who grew up with their music on scene playlists and Warped Tour lineups.

Their shows tend toward the enthusiastic and self-aware, with crowds that actually know the words to deeper cuts. Kline performs with dry, understated stage presence, letting the music do the work. Expect singalongs and genuine affection from attendees, though the energy is more earnest than raucous.

Hellogoodbye touched down in Tampa back in February 2006 at Masquerade, right when the band's infectious pop-punk sound was cresting with 'Here in Your Arms.' That show captured the band at a moment when they were riding the wave of their debut LP, full of the kind of sugar-rush hooks and earnest vocal melodies that made them stand out from the heavier emo pack. Tampa crowds have always had a soft spot for that brand of accessible alt-rock, the kind that doesn't require you to take yourself too seriously. It was the sort of set where you could picture the room bouncing along to every chorus, the band's characteristic lightness landing perfectly with a city that gets the appeal of fun without irony.

Tampa's got a solid tradition of hosting pop-punk and alternative acts, a city that's always been more interested in hooks than angst. The local scene has bred bands that lean toward the brighter end of the rock spectrum, and touring acts like Hellogoodbye have historically found willing ears here. There's a through-line from the late-90s emo surge straight into the 2000s pop-punk wave, and Tampa audiences have generally been there for both chapters.

Skip the strip and head to Hyde Park, Tampa's most livable neighborhood with tree-lined streets, independent shops, and genuine character. Stay nearby and eat at The Bricks of Hyde Park for elevated Southern cuisine in a refurbished historic building. Spend an afternoon at the Dali Museum in nearby St. Petersburg—it's legitimately world-class and a solid hour drive but worth it. Walk along Bayshore Boulevard at sunset before the show. The whole vibe is understated enough that Johnson will feel like the most exciting thing happening all weekend.
