Hellogoodbye
August Hall — San Francisco, CA

Hellogoodbye formed in 2001 in Huntington Beach, California, with Forrest Kline as the primary creative force. They're best known for their 2006 debut album 'Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!' which spawned the indie pop-punk hit 'Here In Your Arms,' a song that somehow became ubiquitous on MySpace and early YouTube despite its jangling, almost twee sensibilities. The track's infectious energy and Kline's breathy vocals defined a particular strain of mid-2000s pop-punk that was equal parts earnest and ironic. Beyond that one big moment, Hellogoodbye continued churning out albums with diminishing mainstream attention, but maintained a devoted cult following who appreciated Kline's songwriting approach—simultaneously clever and heartfelt, nerdy and romantic. They've become something of a comfort band for millennials who grew up with their music on scene playlists and Warped Tour lineups.

Their shows tend toward the enthusiastic and self-aware, with crowds that actually know the words to deeper cuts. Kline performs with dry, understated stage presence, letting the music do the work. Expect singalongs and genuine affection from attendees, though the energy is more earnest than raucous.

Hellogoodbye rolled through SAP Center in October 2013 with the kind of set that felt like a greatest-hits package compressed into six songs. They opened with the blurry rush of "...And Everything Becomes a Blur" and moved through early favorites like "When We First Met" and "Here (In Your Arms)," tracks that had defined their particular brand of pop-punk earnestness back when they first broke through. The band played "Swear You're in Love" and "Just Don't Let Go Just Don't"—songs that showed their softer side—before closing with "(Everything Is) Debatable," a title that fit the stripped-down approach of the evening. It was a lean show, the kind where quality mattered more than quantity.

San Jose's music scene in the early 2010s sat in the shadow of San Francisco, but the city had its own taste for pop-punk and alternative rock. The mid-sized venues here attracted touring bands at the height of their careers, acts that had moved beyond clubs but weren't quite arena staples. Hellogoodbye fit that space perfectly—they were popular enough to draw a crowd, but their particular flavor of melodic, introspective pop-punk found genuine resonance with Bay Area audiences who'd grown up on that sound.

Stay in Willow Glen, where tree-lined streets and local galleries give you something to do before the show. Hit Adega for Portuguese cuisine that actually justifies the price, then walk off dinner around the neighborhood's vintage shops. If you've got afternoon time, the San José Museum of Art is legitimately worth an hour—it's small enough to not feel like a chore, and their contemporary collection is better curated than you'd expect. Grab coffee at Chromatic before heading to the venue. The area's low-key enough that you won't feel like you're in a tourist trap, but established enough that everything works.
