About Filter
Filter started in 1993 as Richard Patrick's post-Nine Inch Nails project, built on industrial rock with heavy electronic elements and accessible hooks. The band peaked commercially in the late 90s with their second album, which spawned the hit "Hey Man Nice Shot" — a deadpan take on a controversial news footage that somehow became their signature track. "Take a Picture" showed they could do introspective alt-rock without losing the electronic edge. Patrick's voice, deadened and distant, became the vehicle for lyrics that were either cryptic or bluntly cynical depending on the song. Filter has existed in various configurations since, with Patrick sometimes being the only consistent member. They've never stopped touring, never really broke up, just kept moving forward with what amounts to a working industrial rock band. The catalog holds up because the foundation was solid: heavy synths, distorted guitars, and a refusal to sound polished or eager to please.
Tight, workmanlike sets with genuine heaviness. Patrick plays it straight, no showmanship. Crowds get loud on the hits but mostly watch rather than mosh. The electronic elements hit harder live than on record.

Filter + Tampa
Filter rolled through Tampa in August 2023, hitting MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre with the kind of setlist that rewards people who actually know their catalog. They opened with '(Can't You) Trip Like I Do,' that collaboration with The Crystal Method that still hits different live, then moved into deeper cuts like 'Obliteration' and 'Welcome to the Fold' before settling into 'Take a Picture,' which is the closest thing they have to a radio moment. They closed the main set with 'Hey Man Nice Shot,' the track most people recognize, the one that proved industrial rock could exist in the mainstream for a minute. It was a tight five-song set that suggested Filter knows exactly who shows up to see them and plays accordingly.

Live Music in Tampa
Tampa's never been a capital of industrial rock the way some cities are, but the market's always supported acts that traffic in synth-heavy, guitar-driven alternative. The amphitheatre circuit in central Florida gives touring bands a reasonable midpoint between the coasts, and Filter's the kind of band that draws people who came of age in the nineties and never really stopped paying attention. There's an audience here for artists who operate outside the mainstream but refuse to disappear.
Tampa road trip to see Filter?
Skip the strip and head to Hyde Park, Tampa's most livable neighborhood with tree-lined streets, independent shops, and genuine character. Stay nearby and eat at The Bricks of Hyde Park for elevated Southern cuisine in a refurbished historic building. Spend an afternoon at the Dali Museum in nearby St. Petersburg—it's legitimately world-class and a solid hour drive but worth it. Walk along Bayshore Boulevard at sunset before the show. The whole vibe is understated enough that Johnson will feel like the most exciting thing happening all weekend.
