Emperor emerged from Norway's black metal scene in the early 1990s as one of the genre's most ambitious acts. Follow-up IV solidified their reputation as thinkers willing to experiment—incorporating clean vocals and progressive song structures while maintaining the raw darkness that defined their sound. The band's influence on how black metal could be orchestral and intellectual rather than purely primitive has aged well. They've never chased trends, instead moving toward prog-influenced material that still sounds like Emperor, not like they're chasing anyone else.
