Earth, Wind & Fire
Coca-Cola Amphitheater — Birmingham, AL

Earth, Wind & Fire formed in 1970 and became one of the most commercially successful bands of the 70s and 80s. Led by Maurice White, they blended funk, soul, jazz, and pop into something that felt both sophisticated and utterly danceable. The band's horn section was their secret weapon — those brass arrangements on tracks like September and Shining Star defined an era. They weren't just a funk band, though funk was the spine of their sound. They could do tender soul ballads like After the Love Has Gone, which showed White's arranging genius and the band's emotional range. By the early 80s, they'd crossed completely into pop territory with Boogie Wonderland and Let's Groove, songs so ubiquitous they've essentially become part of the cultural furniture. What made them different from other funk acts was the sheer musicianship and the sense that every arrangement was considered, intentional. They won six Grammys and sold millions of records worldwide, influencing everyone from Prince to contemporary funk and neo-soul acts.

Earth, Wind & Fire shows are celebrations. The horn section locks in tight, the rhythm section is immaculate, and crowds know every word to September. People actually dance in the aisles. Maurice White commanded the stage with understated cool, and the band played like they enjoyed it.

Earth, Wind & Fire has maintained a steady presence in Birmingham over the years, most recently lighting up Legacy Arena at the BJCC in May 2024. That show pulled from their deep catalog, including the essential "Shining Star," cementing their role as perennial festival draws and arena staples. The band's blend of funk, soul, and jazz continues to resonate with generations of Birmingham audiences.

Birmingham's music DNA runs through soul, blues, and the kind of tight, session-driven R&B that came out of nearby Muscle Shoals. That precision-meets-groove ethic is exactly Earth, Wind & Fire's lane. The city knows how to appreciate musicians who treat their craft like a science, which is basically the entire EWF philosophy.

Stay in Forest Park—tree-lined streets, restored homes, close to downtown without feeling generic. Eat at Chez Fon Fon for excellent French-Italian food in a real neighborhood setting, or Goro Ramen for something more casual but excellent. Spend an afternoon at the Birmingham Museum of Art, which is genuinely worth your time and free. Walk through the Pepper Place district afterward for galleries and coffee. The city's Civil Rights history is significant; the 16th Street Baptist Church is essential if you have the time and reflective headspace.
