About Drain
Drain is a Sacramento hardcore band that emerged in the early 2010s, carving out a reputation for visceral, unpolished aggression. They build their sound on blown-out guitars and vocals that hover between shouting and singing, creating something that sounds deliberately uncomfortable. Their music trades in anxiety and alienation—songs like Honey and Leeches capture a kind of paranoid intensity that feels less like catharsis and more like documenting actual distress. They've become a fixture in underground hardcore circles, known for refusing to sand down their edges or compromise their aesthetic for wider appeal. Their approach to songwriting prioritizes texture and mood over traditional structure, which means their songs often feel like they're barely holding together, in the best way.
Drain shows are tense, physical affairs. The crowd clusters tight and unforgiving. There's minimal stage presence—just raw noise and visible strain from the band. People leave soaked and bruised.

Drain + Washington DC
Drain rolled through The Fillmore Silver Spring in September 2025 and kept things deliberately unglamorous. They opened with "Feel the Pressure" and settled into the kind of set that rewards people who've actually listened to the albums—"Stealing Happiness From Tomorrow" and "FTS (KYS)" came early, establishing the mood before "Who's Having Fun?" asked the question nobody really wants to answer at a punk show. By the time they hit "California Cursed" to close out the main set, it felt less like a victory lap and more like they were just checking boxes, in the best way. No theatrics, no between-song banter. Just the band doing what they do.

Live Music in Washington DC
DC's punk and emo scene has always had a pragmatic streak—bands here tend to skip the pretense and just play. Drain fits naturally into that lineage, part of a generation of bands that treat melodic hardcore and emo as technical disciplines rather than emotional theater. The city's venues, from smaller rooms to The Fillmore circuit, have consistently hosted bands doing this exact kind of work, where the songwriting matters more than the image.
Washington DC road trip to see Drain?
Stay in Georgetown or Capitol Hill, both walkable neighborhoods with excellent restaurants and bars. Book a table at Kinfolk in Capitol Hill for refined New American cooking, or head to Pineapple and Pearls for something more elaborate if you want to splurge. During the day, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden offers world-class contemporary art without the crowds of the main Smithsonians. Walk the C&O Canal towpath if the weather cooperates. Hit up one of the city's serious record shops like Smash! Records before the show.
