Dethklok is a death metal band that exists primarily as a fictional group from the Adult Swim animated series of the same name. The show follows five musicians navigating the absurd logistics of being the world's most brutal band while dealing with record label incompetence, cults, and casual violence. Despite their cartoon origins, Dethklok's music is genuinely heavy—the show's creator Brendan Small composed actual death metal with intricate guitar work and guttural vocals by vocalist Tommy Blacha. Songs like 'Bloodhail' and 'Murmaider' became real tracks that metal fans actually listen to, which is funny but also kind of earned it. The band's jokes work on multiple levels: the music is legitimately brutal while the show's humor mines comedy from metal clichés and the band's own incompetence. They even performed real concerts as Dethklok, which is either the most committed bit or the least ironic thing they could have done.

When Dethklok actually tours, it's packed with fans who came for the heavy riffs and stayed for both. The pit is intense but the whole thing has this self-aware energy—people know this started as a joke but the music hits hard anyway. Brendan Small's guitar work is technical enough to keep musicians engaged. It's heavy without taking itself too seriously, which somehow makes it heavier.

Dethklok played Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee on September 24, 2023, running through 17 songs that hit all the essential marks. Deththeme opened, Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle showed up mid-set, and Murmaider and Thunderhorse were right where you'd expect them. I Ejaculate Fire and The Duel gave the set its heaviest moments. They closed with Go Into the Water after the Fansong-SOS sequence. Eagles Ballroom is a room with real character, and 17 songs of cartoon brutality filled it nicely.

Milwaukee's metal scene is scrappy and unpretentious—more interested in the riff than the resume. The city's produced its share of heavy bands and has always supported touring acts that don't need a major label co-sign. Dethklok's particular brand of prog-metal comedy should find at least a willing audience here, even if the city's traditionally leaned toward harder, more straightforward sounds.

Stay in Whitefish Bay or the East Side — quieter, tree-lined neighborhoods with actual character. Dinner at Colectivo's sister restaurant Odd Duck for inventive local cooking, or hit up Uchi if you want something more refined. Spend your day at the Harley-Davidson Museum if you're into American icons, or walk through the Milwaukee Public Market for the best cross-section of local food producers. The lakefront is worth an afternoon, and if blues is the point of the trip, catch a set at Colectivo or one of the Walnut Street venues while you're in town.
