Black Label Society
Warfield — San Francisco, CA

Black Label Society is Zakk Wylde's main outlet, a heavy metal band that's been churning out thick, sludgy riffs since 1998. Wylde built the project as his counterpoint to his work with Ozzy Osbourne, and it's become the place where he indulges his full metal instincts without restraint. The band delivers crushing doom-tinged metal with Wylde's signature guitar work—those pentatonic shreds layered over fuzzy, distorted chords that hit like a sledgehammer. Black Label Society albums tend toward the same sonic blueprint, which works because the blueprint is loud and effective. Live, they're a freight train. Wylde's treated the band less like a side project and more like his primary vehicle, and fans respect the commitment. They're the kind of band that rewards sitting with their records for a while, letting the heaviness accumulate.

Wylde and crew bring unapologetic heaviness. Crowds are locked in, headbanging in unison. Wylde's guitar work is immaculate and intentional. The whole thing runs longer than you'd expect, which nobody minds.

Known for Stillborn, Suicide Messiah, Flooding the Skies, Stoned and Alone, Fire It Up

Black Label Society rolled through San Jose in July 2006, hitting Shoreline Amphitheatre with the kind of setlist that felt like a greatest hits tour filtered through Zakk Wylde's particular brand of heavy. They opened with "The Beginning... At Last" and built momentum through "Suffering Overdue" and "Bleed for Me," songs that showed the band's range beyond the obvious crushers. "Suicide Messiah" hit hard midway through, while deeper cuts like "Been a Long Time" and "Say What You Will" gave the crowd room to breathe. They closed the main set with "Stillborn," a fitting finale that left the room heavy and satisfied.

San Jose's metal scene has always been overshadowed by the Bay Area's larger reputation, but the city has quietly supported acts across the spectrum—from thrash to doom to the kind of blues-soaked heavy rock Wylde deals in. Shoreline Amphitheatre, where BLS played, became a reliable venue for touring acts who needed something between an arena and a club. The South Bay metal crowd tends to be unpretentious and loyal, more interested in hearing a band play than talking about where they fit in the pecking order.

Stay in Willow Glen, where tree-lined streets and local galleries give you something to do before the show. Hit Adega for Portuguese cuisine that actually justifies the price, then walk off dinner around the neighborhood's vintage shops. If you've got afternoon time, the San José Museum of Art is legitimately worth an hour—it's small enough to not feel like a chore, and their contemporary collection is better curated than you'd expect. Grab coffee at Chromatic before heading to the venue. The area's low-key enough that you won't feel like you're in a tourist trap, but established enough that everything works.
