Beartooth
Paycom Center — Oklahoma City, OK

Beartooth is Caleb Shomo's metalcore project, built on the foundation of a dude who's genuinely angry and isn't interested in hiding it. What started as a solo recording venture in 2013 turned into a legitimate band that trades in heavy, aggressive metal with hooks catchy enough to stick around after the song ends. Disgusting and Aggressive weren't subtle album titles, and they weren't meant to be. Shomo writes about mental health, frustration, and the kind of raw emotional discharge that metalcore does better than most genres. The band's live presence is where they earn their reputation—it's controlled chaos, the kind of show where the pit is actually a feature, not a bug. They've built a loyal crowd of people who come for the heaviness but stay because there's actual songwriting beneath the distortion. Beartooth keeps hitting the road and keeps making records that sound like someone finally snapped.

Beartooth shows are organized violence. The pit runs the whole set, crowd is locked in, and Shomo's not phoning it in from stage. He's in it with them. Heavy and controlled, not chaotic.

Beartooth came through The Criterion in Oklahoma City on April 10, 2022, with a 17-song set that went deep into the catalog. They opened with "Below" and pulled out tracks like "Aggressive," "Fed Up," and "Afterall" alongside the usual staples. "Skin" and "Phantom Pain" were nice surprises in the middle of the set. The encore brought "The Past Is Dead" and "The Last Riff" to close things out. Oklahoma City got the longer, more varied version of the Beartooth setlist -- the kind of night where they clearly felt like stretching.

Oklahoma City's metal and hard rock scene has always had a stubborn streak. The city's produced its share of heavy bands and attracted touring acts serious about their craft. Beartooth fits naturally into that landscape—the kind of outfit that appeals to the region's no-bullshit approach to heavy music. Venues like The Criterion have built steady followings around acts that deliver straightforward intensity without pretense.

Stay in Midtown Oklahoma City, where the restored historic buildings and walkable blocks give you actual neighborhood character. Dinner at Cattlemen's Steakhouse in nearby Stockyard City is the real deal—proper steaks, proper cocktails, zero pretense. Before the show, spend an afternoon at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art or take a walk through the Bricktown canal district. Post-concert, the live music venues around Bricktown stay open late, and you won't feel like you've left an arena and landed nowhere.
