Barenaked Ladies
Morton Amphitheater — Kansas City, MO

Barenaked Ladies started as a four-piece Canadian alternative rock band in the late 80s and became one of those bands everyone somehow knows despite themselves. They hit massive with 'One Week' in 1998, a song so repetitive and absurd it basically weaponized itself into the cultural bloodstream. But that hit obscured what they actually were: smart, self-aware musicians who could write a genuinely affecting song like 'Brian Wilson' or an elaborate concept piece about hypothetical money in 'If I Had $1,000,000.' Their live shows became legendary in part because they weren't trying to be cool, which made them cooler. Steven Page and Ed Robertson had clear chemistry, and the band leaned into comedy without ever becoming a joke. They've gone through lineup changes and had their ups and downs, but they've maintained a stubborn independence and actually stuck around, which counts for something.

Their shows are genuinely fun without feeling desperate about it. Crowds are mixed ages and actually engaged. They'll do the hits you know, but also deep cuts. The banter is real, not scripted. People sing along to everything. It's one of those rare situations where a band and their audience are actually having a good time together.

Known for One Week, Brian Wilson, If I Had $1,000,000, The Old Apartment, Pinch Me

Barenaked Ladies played Starlight Theater in Kansas City on June 11, 2023, with a 23-song set. Starlight is one of the great outdoor venues in the Midwest, and BNL brought a setlist with some deeper pulls -- When I Fall and Enough Time don't surface often. Matter of Time opened, and they worked through It's All Been Done and Roll Out before the usual anchor tracks. The encore was The Old Apartment and Jet Airliner, a Steve Miller Band cover that felt right for Kansas City's classic rock roots.

Kansas City's jazz legacy runs deep, but the city's also developed a scrappy indie and alternative rock scene that appreciates clever songwriting and genre-blending. Barenaked Ladies fit somewhere in that space—they're too pop for the jazz purists and too weird for the mainstream, which is exactly the kind of challenge Kansas City audiences tend to embrace. The city's gotten better at booking acts that don't fit neatly into one box.

Stay in Midtown, where the neighborhood has a real rhythm to it beyond just the venue. Hit up Betty Rae's for upscale barbecue that actually justifies the hype, then walk it off exploring the galleries and vintage shops along Baltimore. Catch a show at the Truman or Liberty Hall depending on the size, but leave time to visit Union Station—it's legitimately one of the finest Beaux-Arts buildings in the country, and worth seeing even if you're just passing through. The Power and Light District is there if you want drinks after, but Midtown's got better bones.
