About Bad Suns
Bad Suns are a four-piece from Huntington Beach that emerged in the early 2010s with a sound that sits somewhere between new wave synth-pop and indie rock. They've built a solid following on the back of albums like Language and Lights and Lanterns, where they worked out their obsession with 80s synths, moody guitar work, and the kind of hooks that stick in your head for days. They're the kind of band that appeals equally to people who care deeply about production choices and people who just want something catchy to play on a road trip. Their live sets tend to be surprisingly lean and focused compared to the bigger alternative acts around them, which actually works in their favor—there's nowhere to hide, and when they nail it, it lands hard. The best moments come when they lock into the synth-driven stuff, where you can feel the whole room zeroing in on the same frequency.
Tight, controlled sets where the synths do a lot of the heavy lifting. Crowds lean in rather than lose it. They're not trying to move you physically so much as make you pay attention. No wasted motion.

Bad Suns + Tampa
Bad Suns last touched down in Tampa back in April 2017, setting up at the USF Sun Dome Parking Lot for a set that leaned into the deeper corners of their catalog. They opened with "Disappear Here" and spent the next hour mining material that showed real range—"Sleep Paralysis" and "Swimming in the Moonlight" landed alongside the tighter cuts like "Daft Pretty Boys" and "Rearview." The band closed things out with "Cardiac Arrest," a solid choice for an exit that left people thinking about what they'd just watched rather than chasing obvious hooks.

Live Music in Tampa
Tampa's indie and alternative rock scene has historically leaned toward heavier sounds, but the city's venues have shown consistent appetite for the brighter, synth-touched indie-pop that Bad Suns peddle. The local ear tends toward bands that can bridge accessible production with lyrical precision, which aligns with what Bad Suns do across their records. College radio and smaller clubs have been the pipeline for this kind of guitar-and-synth driven pop.
Tampa road trip to see Bad Suns?
Skip the strip and head to Hyde Park, Tampa's most livable neighborhood with tree-lined streets, independent shops, and genuine character. Stay nearby and eat at The Bricks of Hyde Park for elevated Southern cuisine in a refurbished historic building. Spend an afternoon at the Dali Museum in nearby St. Petersburg—it's legitimately world-class and a solid hour drive but worth it. Walk along Bayshore Boulevard at sunset before the show. The whole vibe is understated enough that Johnson will feel like the most exciting thing happening all weekend.
