About April Wine
April Wine is a Canadian hard rock band that spent most of the 1980s proving they belonged on arena stages alongside bigger names. Formed in Nova Scotia in 1969, they built a loyal following through consistent touring and a catalog of straightforward rock songs that ranged from radio-friendly like 'Just Between You and Me' to heavier stuff like 'Sign of the Gypsy Queen.' They never quite broke through to stadium-headliner status, which might be why they're overlooked now, but fans of that era know they delivered competent, no-nonsense rock music. The band kept going through the 90s and beyond, never becoming a legacy act because they never fully left the touring circuit. If you liked Thin Lizzy or early Mötley Crüe but wanted something less theatrical, April Wine was the pragmatic choice.
Straightforward rock shows. Meathead crowds, lots of cigarette smoke in whatever venue they're playing. They plug in and go. No surprises. People there because they genuinely want to hear these songs, not for the spectacle.
Known for Sign of the Gypsy Queen, Just Between You and Me, I Like to Play with Fire, Tonight Is a Wonderful Time to Love, You Won't Dance with Me
April Wine + Buffalo
April Wine played Four Winds Casino near Buffalo on October 3, 2025, with a brief two-song appearance that included Sign of the Gypsy Queen and a Happy Birthday to You dedication. Sign of the Gypsy Queen is one of those classic rock deep cuts that people either know by heart or have never heard, and April Wine remains the band most associated with it. Two songs is more of a cameo than a concert, but the casino circuit keeps these Canadian rock veterans on the road.

Live Music in Buffalo
Buffalo's rock scene has always had a particular hardness to it—the city bred Ani DiFranco's DIY ethos and has hosted everyone from Grateful Dead cover bands to serious metal crowds. April Wine fits that working-class rock sensibility perfectly. The city understands bands that don't overthink things and just deliver straightforward, muscular rock. That's exactly their lane.
Buffalo road trip to see April Wine?
Stay in Allentown, where the neighborhood's Victorian architecture and walkable blocks of galleries, vintage shops, and bars feel genuinely lived-in. Dinner at Sear should be priority—chef Jeremy Boyle's locally-sourced approach is legitimately ambitious without the pretense. Catch the contemporary art at Albright-Knox (their recent renovations are worth your time), then spend an evening at one of the neighborhood's dive bars like The Owl that still feels like actual people hang there, not tourists.
