5 Seconds of Summer
Coca-Cola Amphitheater — Birmingham, AL

5 Seconds of Summer started as a cover band on YouTube in 2011 before becoming one of the more durable pop-punk acts of the 2010s. The Australian four-piece built their following on TikTok before most bands knew what TikTok was, which meant they had a genuinely devoted fanbase by the time "She Looks So Perfect" hit in 2014. They've basically done the work of three different bands across their albums: the high-school-angst energy of their early stuff, the radio-friendly experimentation of Youngblood, and the more introspective pop-rock of recent years. They've never been cool by indie standards, which is partly the point. They've also never stopped touring relentlessly or caring about actually being good at their instruments, which is rarer than you'd think in modern pop. Their fans tend to be fiercely loyal, probably because the band treats that loyalty as a job, not a brand opportunity.

They've got the kind of show where everyone's singing along to every word, which makes sense given how many people have grown up with these songs. The energy is pretty straightforward—high tempo pop-punk stuff that keeps things moving, and you'll notice the crowd is mostly younger fans who are genuinely invested, not just there to hang out. They're competent musicians, the set's well-paced, and there's nothing surprising about it, which is fine. It's what you'd expect from a band that's been doing this for over a decade.

5 Seconds of Summer rolled through Birmingham on April 12, 2022, packing out Utilita Arena with a massive 26-song set. The show spanned the full arc of their career -- from the early days of She Looks So Perfect to deep cuts like Red Desert and Castaway. They pulled out Beside You mid-set, a track you don't hear every night, and worked through COMPLETE MESS and Wildflower from the newer material. The encore was Ghost of You into Youngblood, which is about as clean a one-two finish as you can ask for.

Birmingham's music DNA runs deep in soul and rock, but the city's evolved into a legitimate market for contemporary pop-rock and alternative acts. Venues like the BJCC and Boutique Bowl attract touring bands regularly, and there's enough young music interest here to support acts across the spectrum. The city punches above its weight for a mid-sized market, with a crowd that shows up and stays engaged.

Stay in Forest Park—tree-lined streets, restored homes, close to downtown without feeling generic. Eat at Chez Fon Fon for excellent French-Italian food in a real neighborhood setting, or Goro Ramen for something more casual but excellent. Spend an afternoon at the Birmingham Museum of Art, which is genuinely worth your time and free. Walk through the Pepper Place district afterward for galleries and coffee. The city's Civil Rights history is significant; the 16th Street Baptist Church is essential if you have the time and reflective headspace.
